In the painting Darial Gorge from 1862, we are presented with a dramatic and atmospheric landscape. Towering, dark, and imposing cliffs dominate the scene, almost swallowing the sky. Between these colossal rock formations, a deep gorge is carved out, through which a river flows. The water is rendered with a striking iridescence, reflecting a celestial light that pierces the gloom.
Near the waters edge, a small caravan of figures on horseback and camels is depicted, their forms illuminated by the same mysterious light. The overall mood is one of awe and perhaps a touch of apprehension, as the immense scale of nature dwarfs the human presence.
