This is a self-portrait of Johann Friedrich August Tischbein, painted in 1782. The portrait depicts a man with powdered white hair styled in a fashionable wig of the late 18th century. He is wearing a dark brown coat over a white ruffled shirt and cravat, typical attire for a gentleman of that era.
Tischbein is looking directly at the viewer, with a composed and self-assured expression. His blue eyes are keen, and his gaze is steady, suggesting an introspective and confident personality. The lighting in the portrait is soft, coming from the left, which accentuates the contours of his face and adds depth to the painting. The background is a dark, muted tone, which serves to highlight the figure and focus attention on the subject.
The painting exhibits a fine network of craquelure, a sign of its age, which adds a unique texture and depth to the surface of the canvas. This characteristic crackling is common in oil paintings of this period and does not detract from the overall impact of the portrait.
