Painter: Karl Pavlovich Bryullov
Truly a masterpiece of world painting, Karl’s most popular work, which has gone around the world in simply millions of copies of reproductions, all sorts of patches of illustrations, etc. One has to wonder, why is this painting so hugely popular? In this painting, everything is obvious. Starting with the fact that pretty obvious is that the artist quite sincerely as a live betrayed all the aspects and feelings of this picture, you can not always in words, or live actions to repeat all that has presented us a great artist on his canvas.
Description of Karl Bryullov’s painting "An Italian Afternoon"
Truly a masterpiece of world painting, Karl’s most popular work, which has gone around the world in simply millions of copies of reproductions, all sorts of patches of illustrations, etc. One has to wonder, why is this painting so hugely popular? In this painting, everything is obvious.
Starting with the fact that pretty obvious is that the artist quite sincerely as a live betrayed all the aspects and feelings of this picture, you can not always in words, or live actions to repeat all that has presented us a great artist on his canvas. Perhaps we should start with the overall interior that surrounds the girl.
In this picture, every detail has its place and purpose, and everything is done in order to give the viewer the most authentic picture as to what is happening on the canvas. So, for example, the old ladder that our heroine of the painting climbed, with the wicker basket for the grapes.
Even every dark green leaf of the vine, as if alive and reproducing feelings in the same tone as the heroine. The girl herself has a rather delicate and airy image, her barely noticeable blush on her cheeks, snow-white blouse and swarthy skin, which seems to radiate warmth and light itself. At the sight of the wonderfully beautiful bunch of grapes, the girl is simply unable to hide her amazement and admiration.
The entire composition is built around it, but it actively complements the admiration of the girl. The artist’s magnificent play on light, allows us to feel this bunch of grapes as if we could reach into the picture and pluck a couple of grapes from the bunch.
The big, beautiful, brown eyes of the girl show us every drop of her sincerity, purity and, in a sense, even purity, thanks to which the viewer is completely penetrated by the whole situation, and he has no reason not to believe either the girl or the artist, who created this wonderful painting.

The painting depicts a young Italian woman, likely a peasant, in an outdoor setting amidst grapevines. She is holding a bunch of green grapes above her head with her right hand, her gaze directed upwards towards them with a look of either anticipation or contemplation. Her left arm is wrapped around a wooden post or vine, and she is carrying a woven basket filled with red fabric, possibly wine-soaked linens or grapes, on her left side. She wears a loose-fitting white garment with off-the-shoulder styling, revealing her décolletage, and a red velvet cloth is draped over her shoulder and into the basket. Her hair is dark and styled up, adorned with a decorative hairpin. The background is a lush, dark green foliage with hints of a rustic wooden fence or structure.
The subtexts in this painting can be interpreted in several ways. The most prominent is the symbolism of grapes, which traditionally represents abundance, fertility, and the bounty of nature. The womans action of reaching for the grapes, combined with her upward gaze and subtle smile, suggests a connection to this natural abundance and perhaps a sense of pleasure or satisfaction derived from it.
The title, Italian Afternoon (The Italian, who is renting grapes), further emphasizes the setting and the activity. Renting grapes suggests a connection to the harvest or a pastoral lifestyle, adding to the imagery of rural simplicity and connection to the land.
Her attire, particularly the exposed décolletage, can be seen as a blend of natural sensuality and the romanticized ideal of the peasant woman in European art. The painting evokes a sense of idealized rural life, common in Romantic and Neoclassical art, where the beauty and innocence of the common people and the natural world are celebrated. The painting might be hinting at the sensual pleasure of tasting the fruit of the land, connecting the natural bounty with human experience.
The overall mood is serene and evocative, capturing a moment of quiet enjoyment in nature. The painting invites the viewer to contemplate themes of natures generosity, simple pleasures, and perhaps a romanticized view of rural Italian life.
