Среди целого ряда портретов И. Е. Репина один из самых замечательных – портрет П. М. Третьякова, основоположника галереи живописи русских художников, ставшей впоследствии настоящей национальной сокровищницей.
Третьяков, глубоко уважавший и ценивший творчество Репина, приобрел многие из его картин. Репин, в свою очередь, глубоко ценил подвижническую деятельность собирателя. Переписка коллекционера картин и художника, которая продолжалась двадцать пять лет, что доказывает их взаимную привязанность и заинтересованность друг в друге. Портрет Третьякова был написан художником в 1883 году.
Портрет не выделяется темпераментностью кисти и живостью колорита. Репин понимает, что сдержанность и скромность П. М. Третьякова мало гармонировала бы с более активной техникой и яркими красками. Художник нашел сдержанную, суховатую манеру письма.
Третьяков показан на фоне своей любимой галереи. Он сидит, осторожно облокотившись на мягкую спинку стула. Павел Михайлович задумчив, спокоен, он глубоко ушел в себя. Третьяков оставляет впечатление несколько замкнутого человека. Еще молодое лицо с правильными, строгими чертами и рыжеватой бородой выражает собранность, организованность. Превосходно написана рука коллекционера – с красивыми длинными пальцами, лежащими на драпе купеческого сюртука.
Современники считали портрет очень удачным и находили не только внешнее, но и глубокое внутреннее сходство.
