Solyanka Gallery together with Moskino presents the second exhibition of video art from the series “Beyond the Boundaries of Sound”.

From October 1 to October 28, an exhibition of American artist Stefan Shanabruk will open in the lobby of the Zvezda cinema, consisting of three works: documentation of two performances and a video.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

During the performance “Assaulted Landscape with Splattered Rivers and No Place to Hide” (2018), Shanabrook, surrounded by a transparent plexiglass octagon, shoots a paintball gun at a crowd of people who arrived at one of the the most glamorous events of the New York summer at Watermill Center Robert Wilson. Thus, in an aggressive, albeit not dangerous form, the artist draws attention to one of the main problems of American society - the use of weapons.

In the performance “Destruction of the Form on the Ground Covered with Moss” (“Beaten to a Pulp on the Bed of Moss”, 2017), the artist wraps himself with cotton candy, which softens for two hours and takes on a dark color and hardy texture, transforming from the one associated with joy of substance in a reminder of blood, pain, childhood fears and scars.

In Spin City (2010), Shanabrook attaches a video camera to the wheel of a car, the image of which, due to speed, turns into an abstract kaleidoscope of images.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Stefan Shanabrook is an American artist who lives and works in New York. Born in 1965. He graduated from Syracuse University (USA), studied in Florence, took courses at the School of Painting and Sculpture Skowhegan (Skowhegan, USA) and De Atelier (De Atelier, Netherlands). He has participated in many solo and group exhibitions around the world, including such well-known institutions as MoMA and the Swiss Institute in New York, the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Tasmania, the City Museum of Ljubljana, Kulturforum in Berlin. His works are part of private and museum collections in the USA, Europe, Russia, Australia, including the personal collection of contemporary art by Damien Hirst. Since 2010, Stephen Shanabruk has been collaborating with Veronika Georgieva in a number of projects. In his art, he transforms the impressions of life into surreal beauty on the verge of entropy and disaster. It gives a new, often frightening sound to objects and substances commonly associated with comfort and happiness, such as chocolate, plastic toys and sweets.

ABOUT THE PROJECT “BEYOND THE SOUND”

“Beyond the Boundaries of Sound” is a joint musical-lecture and exhibition project of the Solyanka Gallery, the Moscow Ensemble of Contemporary Music and Moskino.

Multidisciplinarity is becoming an increasingly important attribute of contemporary musical and visual art. The project “Beyond the Boundaries of Sound”, which includes a musical, lecture and exhibition part, represents the work of relevant authors working at the junction of various art forms, practices and mediums and exploring their interpenetration and mutual influence.

The music and lecture part is a cycle of free meetings and performances by composers, performers, instrumentalists, sound designers, whose work goes beyond the scope of “pure” academic music and, in addition to musical means, includes a modern arsenal of multimedia technologies: electronics, video, improvisation, elements theatrical and visual arts.

As part of the exhibition, the Solyanka Gallery shows the work of foreign video artists. The project opened with an exhibition of Russian-American artist Veronika Georgieva, followed by an exhibition of Stefan Shanabruk (USA) and Rosa Poe (Czech Republic).

The project “Beyond the Sounds” is part of the program “Solyanka is losing its temper” of the Solyanka Gallery, the essence of which is interaction with various institutions within walking distance from the gallery.

All project events take place in the Zvezda movie theater (Zemlyanoy Val St., 18/22, p. 2).
