- Aesthetically perfect shots that combine precision calculation and craftsmanship
German and Australian photographer Helmut Newton was born in 1920. It is quite difficult to believe that the provocative pictures that turned the world of fashion photography were created by an author whose creative development took place in the middle of the last century. Hellmuth, who dreamed of becoming a paparazzi, achieved unprecedented heights: he owns portraits of Margaret Thatcher and Salvador Dali, and among his admirers there is the world art elite in the person of Andy Warhol, David Bowie, Twiggy, Elizabeth Taylor and many others. In the 80s, the greatest provocateur focused on portrait photography: he shot Catherine Deneuve, Sting, Sophia Loren, Monica Bellucci, and his work with Cindy Crawford "The Lady with the Doberman" is still considered one of the most popular photographs of our time. However, it was the works of the 70s that shocked and amazed the audience to the core. With photographs of this extraordinarily bright, the innovative period of the work of Helmut Newton and visitors of the Erarta Museum will be able to get acquainted.
In 1971, Hellmuth suffered a heart attack, and his wife and muse June Brunell helped Newton cope with the consequences. This event marked the beginning of a new stage in the author’s work: he creates more and more candid photographs, rethinking the image of a woman - now she appears to be imperious and fatal. The images of this period, permeated with voyeuristic and fetishistic overtones, angered both conservatives and feminists - however, in the ranks of the latter, Newton caused a split. While some scolded him for exploitation, others paid tribute to the strong and overtly dominant woman praised by the photographer. And the author himself emphasized: "Voyeurism in photography is a necessary and professional perversion."
The exhibition at the Erarta Museum, succinctly and proudly named after the greatest photographer, will feature 74 works created from 1973 to 1981. Among them - the legendary diptych-antithesis "Here They Come" (1981). Two pictures of four unknown models were supposed, according to Newton, to clearly show how the role of women in society is changing: bigotry is giving way to aggression and sexuality. This work became a symbol of the change in the era of the rule of men over women - emancipation and a new morality were already beginning to gain strength in society.
The exhibition will also feature several images called Rue Aubriot, created by the photographer in 1975 for French Vogue. It was these shots of Newton that brought unprecedented fame to Yves Saint Laurent’s tuxedo: a dimly lit Parisian alley, an androgynous woman with her hair slicked back, in a black tuxedo, a white shirt with a black tie and with a cigarette posing next to a model wearing only stilettos. These works are the pinnacle of Helmut Newton’s amazing ability to fill the frame with sexuality.
The exhibition will also include such famous photographs as "Saddle I. Paris", "Mannequin and Man", "Pere Lachaise Cemetery", portraits of the young Karl Lagerfeld, Andy Warhol, Veruschka, Charlotte Rampling, Elsa Peretti, David Hockney, Paloma Picasso, sportswomen Gail Olinekova and Lisa Lyon, self-portrait with his wife and an unknown model, and others.
The curator of the exhibition at the Erarta Museum is Matthias Harder, Director of the Helmut Newton Foundation. June Brunell opened this fund after the death of her husband, in 2004, in memory of the fact that in 1938 Newton, fearing the persecution of the Nazis, was forced to leave his home and country.
Quotes about Helmut Newton:
“Newton’s photographs are immediately recognizable. In my opinion, this is his genius. The work of all great photographers can be distinguished from thousands of other photographers doing the same. The works of Avedon and Bourdin are also very characteristic, but when I go through a bunch of pictures, I recognize Helmut’s pictures instantly. Unless this is an excellent copy, which is extremely rare, it is impossible to repeat Helmut. Whatever he does - the highest grade, because it is Newton. Those who imitate him lack taste. Black and white pictures of Newton, if they can be compared with anything, then with the drawings of Matisse. " Karl Lagerfeld, fashion designer
“In his work, he doesn’t focus on the camera. When you look at his pictures, you will notice that he puts himself in the shoes of the one who is watching what is happening. This is rarely seen in photography. Some may think that there is a perfect angle for the face and for the body, but their angle of view is always slightly different. He seems to be spying on you, and nothing escapes him. " Catherine Deneuve, actress
“Every woman I know wants to meet Helmut. Even if I name 50 actresses, they would rather want to meet Helmut Newton than Steven Spielberg. Because each in her own way wants to be photographed with him. And out of fifty forty-five will be ready to be photographed naked. The popularity that Helmut has is much more than he imagines.
