On November 24, 2017 at VDNH a reporting exhibition of the winners of the project in the field of modern culture “RISE” in the direction of “Graphic Design” will open. Applications for the contest were accepted from August 30 to October 1, 2017.
The winners of the new competition were determined by the curator of the direction “Graphic Design”, a teacher, the head of the author’s School of Font and Typography Tagir Safaev. They became the authors of two group applications:
- - fourth-year students of the Higher School of Press and Media Industry of the Moscow Polytechnic University, Yegor Golovyrin, Valery Elunin, Varvar Goncharov, Veronik Karzakov and Alexander Korsakov with the project "WATCH ON SOAP";
- - A graduate of Moscow State Technical University. N. E. Bauman, interface and video effects designer Roman Kuznetsov and a graduate of the British Higher School of Design, artist, photographer, graphic designer and curator Alexei Partola with the project “LOOKING FOR THERE ANYWHERE.”
The basis of the concept of the exhibition "AWAY ON THE SOAP" is the interpretation of famous Russian proverbs and colloquies. Familiar phraseological units from childhood are embodied in the format of three-dimensional lettering and relief compositions. All exhibits are created from traditional Russian material - laundry soap, which allows you to very convincingly imitate the style of white stone carving.
“The creation of the concept“ WATCH ON SOAP ”began with the search for equipment and materials that have an unusual character and interesting plastic qualities,” comment the authors of the project.
“In the Russian tradition, the phenomenon, which is now called lettering, existed in two manifestations: on the plane - in the form of ornamented letters in manuscripts, and in volume - in architecture, white stone temple carvings. In the space of the exhibition, we turned to three-dimensional lettering, but did not limit ourselves to the traditions of embossed carving and decided to boldly experiment.
Why soap? We wanted to place household material familiar to every person in the unusual space of the exhibition. Soap has its own character and interesting plastic qualities, this allowed us to freely work with form, volume and technique.
The central object of the exhibition is cubic sculpture. Everything is literal here: sewed on soap. The experiment with form and meanings continues in relief: everyone knows proverbs and sayings, like soap, come from Russian life and change, still literally “becoming attached” to the material. The exhibition invites viewers to join the game with letters, for this another object is made - "tag".
The project “LOOKING FOR THERE IS NO ANYWHERE” was inspired by the general childhood memories of the authors about the search for valuable objects in the grass, which gradually grew into a creative search for the Russian Idea as an image. An inquisitive viewer in the thicket of moss will be able to recognize the germinating symbols of the Old Russian script. According to the authors, the project is very optimistic, since the search for a Russian idea is always relevant, continuous and sincerely excites every Russian person.
Curator Tagir Safaev about the competition and exhibition "RUSSIAN LETTERING":
“An image cannot be calculated and decomposed, it can be transmitted only by catching its spirit. Russian letters also have an image, and finding it is not so simple, for this you need to be an artist and feel the nature of the Cyrillic alphabet. The Russian alphabet is closely connected with the culture, history of Russia and the subtle that they call the Russian spirit. Working with font, letters in creative search mode with different materials has been flourishing in Moscow for two good decades. It is not surprising that the event, which at first suggested a common theme: “City, typography, font”, after long discussions, resulted in a competition of projects called “Russian lettering”. This name is ambiguous and voluminous, exactly as new and unexpected as this case requires. ”
The projects of the winners in the direction of Graphic Design will be presented in Pavilion No. 16 Hydrometeorology at VDNH from November 24, 2017 to January 8, 2018.
