From November 5 to December 14, 2020, the North Caucasus branch of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts presents the exhibition "Days of Prigov in Vladikavkaz", timed to coincide with the artist’s 80th birthday. The exposition will feature poems, sketches of installations and installations themselves, texts, appeals, objects and video works.
The goal of the project is to acquaint the inhabitants of Ossetia with the variety of directions in the work of Dmitry Prigov - a poet and artist, author of numerous performances, playwright and director, participant of the largest international forums of contemporary art, winner of the Pushkin Prize of the Alfred Telfer Foundation.
The exposition of the exhibition will naturally combine verseograms, installation sketches, appeal texts, objects, installations and video works by D. A. Prigov, forming models and contexts of contemporary culture.
A special place in the project is given to installations made according to the sketches of D. A. Prigov by students of the Vladikavkaz Art School named after V. A. Dzhanaeva, who already have experience in creating art objects in joint projects with the Branch. In September 2020, the project curator Vitaly Patsyukov met with students, where he introduced the children to the creative activities of Dmitry Prigov. As a result of joint discussions, five sketches of installations were selected for their subsequent implementation.
Project curator Vitaly Patsyukov:
Dmitry Aleksandrovich Prigov was aware of himself as a perceiver and perceived, in his art he not only “looks” himself, but, most importantly, he is “looked at”, the gaze of beings is directed at him. All of the poet’s installations are built on this optics, broadcast from the secular theater to the sphere of mystery, which the all-seeing Eye gazes at. It contemplates the action that unfolds before it, its gaze is turned to the character - a cleaner or a plumber, to “environmental workers” who are able to cleanse the space of our life and maintain the transparency of its existence. In these sacred dimensions there is the Grail, the traditional image of D. A. Prigov’s art - the justification of our actions, a real metaphor of sacrifice, combining eternal traditional values with the values of our life today.
Director of the Pushkin Museum. A.S. Pushkina Marina Loshak:
Dmitry Aleksandrovich Prigov is one of the key figures in the history of Russian unofficial art, a man who organically combines irony and seriousness, elements of Russian and world culture, various forms and media in his works. His work remains an important source of inspiration for the younger generation of artists, and student works created especially for the "Days of Prigov" are proof of this. We are glad that we have the opportunity to acquaint the inhabitants of Vladikavkaz and the entire region with the art of D. A. Prigov, and we thank the Mikhail Prokhorov Foundation for supporting this project.
The project provides for a parallel cultural and educational program. It will include the following activities:
