From January 29, 2020, the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts (103 Lenin St.) exhibition work "Chekhov Life" will begin. It is associated with an important anniversary - the 160th anniversary of the birth of A.P. Chekhov (1860 - 1904).
Chekhov has long been recognized as a classic of world literature. Each generation of readers and viewers found something different in his works, which still have not lost their relevance. It is always interesting to know how his work is perceived now. Our contemporary, referring to the works presented at the exhibitions, will be able to realize not only the role that Chekhov played in the history of world culture, but also make up his personal picture of him.
The main goal of the project is to address various aspects of the life and work of the great writer with the help of art objects. This is not only the image of the author himself, the heroes created by him, but also everything that surrounded him, the era in which he lived and created. Chekhov and his life are the two main characters of our story. Works of painting, sculpture, graphics and decorative art, both ancient and modern, will help to reveal some of the facets of the richest world that is associated with this bright and talented person.
The first exhibition of the project - “The Image of a Writer” is dedicated to the interpretation of the image of a writer in the art of Russian artists of the 20th century.
Most people know this image of Chekhov: a middle-aged man wearing a beard and pince-nez. This appearance of the writer is captured in a number of photographs. Many recall the portrait painted by the artist I. E. Braz in 1898. Other pictorial portraits of Chekhov are also known. Among them are the work of Levitan (1885), who was friends with the writer, and the work of his brother, Nikolai Pavlovich Chekhov (1883), stored in the State Literary Museum in Moscow. This is the work of Chekhov’s contemporaries. And how the writers were portrayed by artists of later times can be seen in the objects presented at the exhibition. The works are presented from the collection of the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts. It is noteworthy that these works were performed in various types of art - graphics, sculpture and decorative art.
The Chekhov Life project will last throughout 2020, it is planned that the exposition will be updated every quarter. Throughout the entire period, the museum will present to the audience about 20 works.
