The Museum of Architecture presents the exhibition project “Architecture of Stadiums”, dedicated to the XXI World Cup. The championship will become the main sporting event of 2018 and will be held at 12 stadiums in 11 cities of Russia. Of particular importance in such events are the sports arenas themselves - the most relevant trends of their time are embodied in their architecture.
The Museum houses a unique collection of materials that reveal the almost century-long history of the construction and design of stadiums in the USSR. The purpose of the exhibition is to acquaint the general public with materials that have been little studied and not previously displayed on the history of the construction of sports facilities in our country.
Vivid architectural drawings along with photographs of completed projects will make up the first - historical - section of the exhibition. In this part, the history of the legendary Dynamo Moscow stadium, the Luzhniki sports ensemble, the Leningrad Kirov Stadium, sports arenas in Minsk, Yerevan, Kiev and other major cities of the country will be revealed. Such outstanding Soviet architects as Nikolai Colli, Nikolai Ladovsky, Dmitry Iofan, Alexander Vlasov and many others were involved in the design of the stadiums. The exhibition will show the evolution and variety of various types of structures - from horseshoe-shaped stadiums with two playing fields, athletics arenas with a moto track to multifunctional complexes of the modernist era.
The second section - the modern one - is dedicated to the arenas where the matches of this year’s Championship will be held. The exposition will include not only models, projects and photographs of new and reconstructed stadiums, but also materials dedicated to the best foreign buildings erected for international tournaments of the last decades.
Within the framework of the exhibition project, thematic lectures, excursions, including in several foreign languages, as well as conferences and round tables with leading architects, are planned. The inclusive program of the exhibition consists of tactile copies of historical stadiums designed by the Museum specifically for people with disabilities, accompanying texts in Braille, and guided tours.
The excursion program of the exhibition is organized with the support of Get Better Audioguide.
