From March 18, a new exhibition will be available to the audience of the Perm Gallery, which presents the work of one of the most respected masters of engraving - Jacques Callot (1592-1635). His works influenced both his contemporaries and subsequent masters of printed graphics (Rembrandt collected Callot’s engravings, Goya’s cycle of engravings "The Disasters of War" was created under the influence of a similar Callot cycle), became the subject of a rush among collectors.
Callo can hardly be called a master of any particular genre. In large panoramic compositions and suites of small engravings, he became a kind of chronicler of his time. He overcame the temptations of Mannerism and was not plunged into the spectacular networks of the Baroque. He simply became Callot, whose manner and style cannot be confused with any other engraver. With his graceful needle, he sent dozens and hundreds of characters to live on tiny pieces of paper: breathers and musketeers, landsknechts and peasants, commedia dell’arte actors and paupers of various stripes. In his graphic miniatures, the macrocosm and the microform are tightly merged, everything is the same here: sacred and secular, fairs and war, executions and tournaments. Callot’s optics is the fruit of sober observation and reflection, an outside witness who is not deceived by reality, but does not sympathize with it, but only strives for its knowledge. "Not cry,
The exposition will present the works of the artist himself: in the collection of the gallery there are 18 etchings by Callot, created in different periods of his work and representing a change in the manner of engraving, a change in aesthetic preferences and marking important cycles of works (“Caprici”, “Disasters of War”, etc.)
Also, gallery visitors will see at the exhibition prints by artists of the 16th century, representing the previous period in the development of this technique (H. Goltzius); works of engravers of the 17th century who worked with the largest masters of Baroque style painting (P. Rubens, A. Van Dyck), as well as works of artists who were influenced to varying degrees by Callo (Stefano della Bella, Rembrandt, Piranesi, Goya).
One of the key ideas of the exhibition is to trace the history of the formation of the literary myth of the Musketeers. Callot is a contemporary of the literary heroes of Dumas, depicting the events in which they were involved. The exhibition is complex: it presents not only works of graphics, but also paintings, numismatics and works of decorative and applied art of the 17th-19th centuries, united by time and the art of Callot.
Three sensory showcases include two dozen commented books provided for the exhibition by various library institutions of the city of Perm and private owners. Memoirs and historical research, prose and poetry - another angle of discovery for visitors to the museum of a big name in the history of modest graphic art.
The exposition format of the exhibition will be complemented by a lecture program.
