The works of A.Dubov are distinguished by their integrity and organicity, rare for modern painting. The traditions of the remarkable Russian artists of the twentieth century, N. Krymov, K. Istomin, A. Vasnetsov, are distinctly translated into them. He writes with large color spots, large colorful masses, successfully combining them with an active contour line. The artist himself says that in his work he is primarily interested in space, because it is always individual and inimitable. The same landscape motifs and interiors are often repeated, vary, but, for all their proximity and even similarity, Dubov’s paintings are not alike, they differ each time in a differently thought out composition and plot. In addition, each picture has its own unique atmosphere, its own circle of associations, causing various emotions and feelings.
At the exhibition, Oaks claims to be a master of interior design and portraiture in the interior. A favorite motive is the artist’s workshop. With special care and love, he “captures” the most ordinary, modest objects and priceless old things - witnesses of the life of several generations. Many objects from the interior "pass" into still lifes, inspired by the invisible presence of man. The artist writes what he constantly sees, that he understands well. The ability to see and identify in simple things complicated, hidden features distinguishes the work of Andrei Dubov.
Andrei writes to Moscow and the Moscow Region, the nature of central and northern Russia, the Crimea, finding landscape and architectural motifs interesting from the point of view of plasticity. And everywhere he is attracted by quiet streets and alleys with blank fences, modest houses with peeling walls ("Plesky Yard", "Rainy Day", "Road", "In the Garden", "Gurzuf", "Totma"). A subtle but saturated color in many of his paintings is built on complex tonal relationships. The artist sees the beauty of discreet corners of nature where others do not notice it. The natural gift of a colorist is also manifested in works written as a result of foreign travels (views of Stockholm, Riga, Montenegro, Tunisia). In a number of landscapes: “Summer Day”, “On the Volga”, “Evening in the Reach” A.Dubov, forming a generalized form, with broad pictorial masses, through a powerful color tension reaches the monumental sound of images.
A.V. Vasnetsov wrote about A.Dubov: “He did not follow the seductive path of lightweight fashion and did not stop at the equally lightweight positions of naturalistic credibility. Dubov opposed all this with the hard way of knowing the nature of art. He is busy with the problems of composition of space, but not in abstract construction, but in the realization of living sensations of nature. His circle of topics is constant: it is a landscape, still life, portrait in the interior. He is not interested in literary pseudo-significance, he is passionate about the search for spatial and color-spatial problems. ”
Since 2011 A.Dubov is a professor at the Department of Drawing and Painting at Moscow State University of Printing. He was awarded the silver medal of the Russian Academy of Arts, the gold and silver medal of the Creative Union of Artists of Russia.
The artist’s works are in the collections of many Russian museums and art galleries: in Moscow, Taganrog, Tomsk, Kursk, Tula, Kurgan, Plyos, in the art gallery of Kutaisi, in private collections in Germany, Italy, Belgium, Russia.
