An exhibition of Yulia Shafarostova "Fountains of Bachikistan" opens in the gallery "Alisa". The exposition will include graphic works from the series “Projects of Non-Working Fountains of Bachikistan” and the installation “Drinking Fountain”.
At the Garage Triennial of Russian Contemporary Art, artist Yulia Shafarostova demonstrated a mythological project about the notorious Musical District of Krasnodar, which she turned into the Bachikistan Khanate with abundant culture and infrastructure: there is a resort, a garden and an art residence.
The dichotomous construction created by the artist formed stable pairs: somehow comfortable public spaces turned into a resort, weeds and unfinished ones - into a marvelous garden, kitchen gatherings - into an art residence. One of the really existing objects that unites the fictional and the real world is the fountain in the artist’s courtyard - a completed landscaping object, but not working for a single day. The roads and courtyards of Bachikistan are constantly flooded with rain and sewage, but the fountain, which by its purpose should serve as a source of moisture, avoids its function, becoming a symbol of meaningless luxury.
Each image becomes a meeting point for the lush, absurd, Middle Eastern form of fictional non-functional objects and content in the form of flora of Krasnodar latitudes - clover, dandelion, plum, apple, fruits and herbs, which the artist collects while walking around Bachikistan.
Yulia Shafarostova is an artist, she is engaged in installation, graphics and photography, works with the themes of identity, mythologization. In his work, he attaches great importance to local situations and contexts, turning them into universal and generally accessible. She studied at the school of photography Khmel and Sukhoveeva (Krasnodar) and KISI (Krasnodar Institute of Contemporary Art). Also works in the Art Cooperative "Businki".
