The exhibition of Yuji Hiratsuki “Life in the era of Gendai”, that is, in the modern era, opens up the creative world of the artist, who simultaneously belongs to the cultures of East and West.
The exhibition presents about 40 graphic works that embody thoughts on today’s life, the dialogue of cultures and art in the era of the global circulation of artistic images. In an ingenious and original manner, the artist develops the traditions of ukiyo-e - paintings of a changing world, transferring canonical Japanese stories to the everyday environment of megacities and pushing them with universal images of cosmopolitan Western culture.
Based on the peculiar chronicle of the everyday life of Corvallis, a small American town in which Yuji Hiratsuka settled, he includes in his attention a variety of impressions of traveling around the United States and annual trips to Japan, creating collective images of people he met on his life’s journey.
Yuji Hiratsuka works in the technique of printed graphics, the complexity and impeccable perfection of which are one of the main achievements of fine art in Japan. In the works of Hiratsuki, the intaglio intaglio method is combined with the use of shin-collet, printing on a special grade of the thinnest paper, giving the prints a special grace.
