"The ability to fantasize… is the first foundation of the new architecture."
Yakov Chernikhov
Jacob Chernikhov International Architectural Charitable Foundation and A.V. State Museum of Architecture Shchuseva presents the exhibition “Yakov Chernikhov. Images of architecture. " This is a unique opportunity for a long time to see the author’s architectural and graphic masterpieces in such a significant volume.
Yakov Chernikhov (1889-1951) - architect, graphic artist and teacher, a bright representative of the architectural futurology of Russia in the early Soviet period. He combined his best graphic compositions into three books of architectural fantasies published in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) at the turn of the 1920s and 30s. Unique in character and beauty, these publications brought him worldwide fame and established Chernikhov’s reputation as a brilliant composer of modern architecture.
Chernikhov’s addiction to man-made graphic art was based on his belief that graphic literacy was no less important than written. He was convinced that in the twentieth century, graphics will become the main international language of civilization, for decades anticipating the advent of op art and computer graphics with its research. In his interpretation, architectural graphics became an independent field of architectural creativity. Chernikhov’s compositions, their architectonics, strict sophistication, musicality and today have a magnetic effect on the viewer.
The exposition presents the main cycles of architectural and graphic masterpieces by Jacob Chernikhov: "Expatriatics", "Aristography", "Fundamentals of modern architecture", "Design of architectural and machine forms", "Architectural fantasies. 101 compositions ”,“ Palaces of Communism ”,“ Pantheons of the Great Patriotic War ”and“ Architectural Tales ”.
