The exhibition "Temporary Storage" comprehends the theme of time and historical changes from the standpoint of memory - individual and collective, and through the prism of architecture. Human memory has a complex structure, performing various functions of information storage. The name of the exhibition “Temporary storage” plays up the function of operational or short-term memory: “Our exhibition is actually a zone of“ RAM ”, where part of the information
almost immediately disappears, and part settles and remains with us forever. The property inherent in photography, which can be expressed by the phrase "it really was" is also operational. We focused on the processes taking place with information in the collective and personal consciousness: remembering, reproducing, distorting, interpreting and assigning, ”says curator Svetlana Taylor.
Using images accumulated during various projects, the curator and artists verify the authenticity of reality and their own memories. Today it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain relationships with the physical world, the abundance of images only confuses the traces of once real events, and photo documentation is no longer a guarantee of obtaining facts, blurring the visible zone. In what specific area does disconnection with the present arise? What do we really remember? Where do memories come from, their authenticity or falsity?
This exhibition is about time, which acts as a heap of lost and present, history and memory, fact and fiction - this experience can most likely be called an experimental time travel. The starting point in the chronology of the exhibition is 1991 and what happened next, not only from the point of view of the new borders of the state, but also the change in the concept of borders as a whole. Including mental boundaries, as well as the emergence of new contact zones against this background - common ground and practices. Temporary storage is a personal version of an era document.
The exhibition consists of several blocks, overlapping one another, the visual layers overlap part of the archive information, and in some places a picture of the present is embedded in them.
The first block, “Monument”, is documented by Moscow’s self-building, which arose in the 90s and later, now destroyed. Architecture here is a vivid expression of time as a product of the society that created it. It is almost an ideology - that leaves the zone of dreams and dreams, the territory of myth and physically “descends” to the earth. The monument of a bygone era is the photo project of Anna Mikheeva: then, in 2015, she managed to document the “night of long buckets”, in which the list 104 and the buildings of the Moscow self-construction, to be demolished, were announced.
The Transformations block is a chronicle of changes in the city from the 90s to the present, which are described with the help of hundreds of archival photographs, as well as the projects of Yegor Zaika and Evgenia Dyomina. Alyona Trushina, a participant in the exhibition, created a video from these materials. The photographs are illustrated by quotes from the architect Dasha Paramonova from the book “Mushrooms, Mutants, and Others: The Architecture of the Luzhkov Era” about the General Plan of New Opportunities adopted in the capital in the 90s, which, according to the author of the book, “put the investment potential of Moscow land at the forefront, but he didn’t take into account the problems of infrastructure, transport and the real problems of citizens. ”
The third block of “Trends” is devoted to rethinking the trends of the 90s and is represented by photographs by Stas Falkov. Stas takes photographs and collaborates with different subcultures at the intersection of music, fashion and graffiti. His 90s - without horror devastation, built in a refined aesthetics: lead sky, total "beauty" and the cold detachment of faces. His photographic works are characterized by manic thought-out scenography, perfectionism, restrained light and hard casting. His work is the clearest example of visual adaptation to the cultural code of the time, when lifestyle becomes a form of culture, and identification with the community is a statement about the generation.
The exhibition is held as part of the III Biennale of Street Wave Art ARTMOSPHERE : ARTMOSSPHERE is the first and only Russian Biennale that introduces the general public to the most prominent representatives of street art from around the world. The main project of the ARTMOSPHERE Biennale runs from August 31 to October 14 at the Winery in the Big Wine Vault of the Center for Contemporary Art in the format of a collective exhibition of street wave artists who entered the field of contemporary art from graffiti and other practices in working with urban space.
