From January 24 to February 26, 2017, the WINZAVOD Center for Contemporary Art, as part of the START Young Art Support Project, will host an exhibition by Novosibirsk artist Vladimir Kartashov, "Come see me." The site will turn into an open workshop for a month: the painter will create his work day after day, filling the walls of the START space with a monumental mural using the technique of tempera painting in front of the viewer. The project will result in a mural that combines the traditions of 20th-century Soviet monumental art and street art.
Kirill Preobrazhensky, curator of the START project: “In the exhibition project“ Come see me ”, as a curator, I am primarily interested in the figure of a modern painter. Previously, there was a state order for monumental painting, today it is not. Nevertheless, despite the lack of demand for this type of art, the departments of monumental painting continue to produce artists. Under these conditions, we are curious about a young man who receives a classical education and continues to paint. We place it in the space of the START site, inviting viewers to look not so much at the work of art, but at the artist himself and his medium - monumental painting. "
In the sketches of future paintings, antiquity is adjacent to the Middle Ages and modernity. In the process of Vladimir Kartashov’s work, scenes from the life of the heroes of the “new time” that exist simultaneously in several quasi-historical layers will appear on the walls. Through everyday life with its recognizable symbols of mass culture, semi-mythical images of the past erupt - barbed wire encircles antique columns, and centaurs in motorcycle helmets jump along the streets of the cities of the future.
Vladimir Kartashov, artist: “The history of art does not go away - it is phantomically present in me, fragments of great empires of large styles are visible everywhere. I walk along the gray, planned built-up streets, go into the dark porches, look through the muddy windows, and live the story of my medium. "
The eclecticism of the plots is one of the main characteristics of the painting by Vladimir Kartashov.
Kirill Preobrazhensky, curator of the START project: “This is a mixture of the style of total painting and gallery street art”, a journey based on the motives of Marxist Latin American art; a mix of the perceived influences and traditions of monumental painting of the XX-XXI centuries, starting Diego Rivera and ending with Swoon. "
