"Nausea". Jean-Paul Sartre
Exhibition “Vladimir Migachev. Void ”will be held in the ARTSTORY gallery from February 27 to April 5, 2020. Part of the new project of Vladimir Migachev consists of large-scale paintings, which have long become a kind of visiting card of the artist. This time, the author unfolds apocalyptic plots in two picturesque “spaces” - a cinema hall and a forest. The main series of works will be collected in the form of a total installation "Emptiness", which gave the name of the entire exhibition. It includes paintings made on very non-standard foundations - cardboard boxes for building materials from a chain supermarket. A huge spatial composition is made up of boxes, like a puzzle, and the viewer is invited to wander along these cyclopean walls (3 by 3, 6 meters in size) to discover paintings from the back.
Vladimir Migachev: “This is the first time I am allowing myself such an active game with space, and therefore I am very worried. I wanted the viewer to become not just an outside observer, but to plunge into this space, into this void. ”
The concept of "emptiness" refers to the work of the existential philosopher J. -P. Sartre "Nausea." Migachev uses quotes from this novel as accompanying inscriptions to his installation, as if graffiti on street walls. Hollow boxes refer to the really existing region of Krasnodar, native to the artist, uncomfortable, haphazardly built up, as if assembled from fragile materials at hand, but nonetheless living a real, real life.
Migachev: “Sartre is very important to me. I share this state of his that he experienced in the last century, the desire to break out of the surrounding grayness, find a perspective, get out of this space. The condition remains, it is now in me. For me it’s a feeling of Void. I don’t want to teach anyone, it’s important to simply outline the questions so that the viewer feels that he needs to look for some way… ”
For the first time, painting appears to be an auxiliary element of Migachev’s art project. On huge canvases, landscapes familiar to the artist appear in which crowds of people are intentionally not personified, from the back. They look at the screen in the form of a blind spot or emptiness. Dressed in uniforms, comb through desert forest spaces. The landscape, written in bright contrasting strokes, clearly reads like a landscape after an environmental disaster.
Candidate of art criticism, curator, critic Kirill Svetlyakov, in an article entitled “Overproduction of Emptiness and Reality” published in the exhibition’s catalog, writes: “For some critics, Vladimir Migachev’s art is clearly associated with the tradition of European neo-expressionism, but expressionism always implies breaking out of tradition her. For Migachev, such an exit from himself was an exit into reality from the conventions and mythologies of the twentieth century. ”
In his works, Vladimir Migachev always uses the author’s painting technique, using a mixed composition of paints, including ash and coal, quartz sand and clay, sometimes even ordinary earth-chernozem, with Kuzbasslak as the basis. The complex, deep surface of the paint layer makes the overall imaginative feel of these paintings even more piercing and subtle. Feeling of Void.
