From December 17, 2019 to January 30, 2020, the Multimedia Exhibition “Valaam. Space beyond time. ”
The exposition is dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the revival of the Valaam monastery.
It will feature 3D reconstructions of photographs of Old Valaam, modern 360-degree VR panoramas, authentic prints and artifacts of the 19th and 20th centuries from private collections, as well as a portrait gallery of the inhabitants of the Valaam Monastery of modern authors.
The Valaam workshop made the greatest contribution to what today is called “genre photography”. Many of the works of this shop can be put on a par with the works of such masters as William Carrick, Andrey Karelin, Maxim Dmitriev, Karl Bulla. This contribution in terms of volume and quality, perhaps, has nothing to compare with in monastic photography: brothers in fishing, harvesting cabbage, in workshops, in the construction of the cathedral, on mowing, on vacation. Numerous photographs of hermitages and their inhabitants, expressive portraits of schemniks surrounded by harsh and virgin nature. Photographs taken in natural light and “magnesium light”. Thanks to the works of these often obscure ascetics, we have the opportunity to touch a genuine documentary evidence of the life of the country and the Church in the second half of the 19th-20th centuries.
Cooperation with the Moscow Club of Collectors of Photography allowed us to present at the exhibition a large number of genuine prints of the late XIX - first half of the twentieth century. Among the photographs from the collections of Victor Shtulman, photographer Sergey Maksimishin, Victor Molchanov, Konstantin Benediktov, there are genuine pearls.
It is not easy to remove the monastery life, this lesson requires special concentration and mood. In addition, the brothers must trust the renter. One of these authors was Priest Igor Palkin, who had been coming to the island for several years. Sometimes on duty, accompanying His Holiness Patriarch Kirill on his annual trips to Valaam. More often, on the days of his vacation, he enters the space of monastic life, lives it together with his brotherhood and takes it off.
A group of photographers of the ART of FOTO gallery Vadim Levin, Roman Zemlyachiv and Igor Smolnikov not so long ago touched the life phenomenon of a secluded monastic monastery, but were deeply imbued with the atmosphere of this fraternity, communication with the Abbot and the inhabitants. Their portraits, shot in traditional technology on a large-format camera, at first glance seem somewhat detached. But this is only at first glance. Filigree copyright prints are imbued with genuine respect and trust.
On display, the views of Valaam at the beginning of the 20th century will be connected with modern 360-degree panoramas from the Valaam mobile application. VR-technology will transfer the viewer to this landscape, as it now appears in the XXI century.
Vernissage will take place on December 17 at 19.00. Entrance to the exhibition will be free on this day. Gallery address: Savvinskaya embankment, building 23, building 1 (metro station “Sportivnaya”).
