The exhibition introduces the most interesting part of the collection of the Voronezh Museum of Art related to the work of the outstanding master of Russian fine arts, academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts I.N. Kramskoy, one of the central figures of Russian art life of the second half of the XIX century. The viewer will also have the opportunity to once again get in touch with the art of the masters of the brilliant galaxy of Wanderers, a kind of symbol of Russian painting of the late 19th century.
The exposition will comprise about 60 works of painting and graphics. It will begin with early drawings made by Kramsky back in his years of study at the Academy of Arts. Of particular interest is the artist’s sketch for the competitive picture for the second gold medal “Oleg’s campaign in Constantinople. 1861. " The sketch is also interesting because in the upper part of the sheet the red wax seal of the Academy rector Fedor Ivanovich Bruni and his own handwritten inscription: “The rector of Bruni has been approved” have been preserved.
In addition to Kramskoy’s works, the exhibition will feature paintings by famous artists of the Wanderers, Kramskoy’s comrades, A. Kuindzhi. I. Levitan, G. Myasoedov, V. Polenov, V. and A. Vasnetsov, the work of a native of Voronezh artist A. Buchkuri - an active exhibitor of the Partnership, etc.
For the first time, viewers will see the unfinished study by F. Vasilyev, the work “Water Mill” by V. Makovsky, etchings by I. Shishkin and two pencil drawings by I. Repin, never before been exhibited.

Kramskoy (1837-1887), a painter, organizer and theoretician of art, was an example of devotion to the idea associated with the conviction of the high mission of the artist and his public duty. I.N. Kramskoy was born on May 27 (June 8), 1837 in the city of Ostrogozhsk, Voronezh province, studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts with professor A.T. Markov. In the 1860s, along with the artists B. B. Wenigom and N.A. Koshelev painted the dome of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. I.N. Kramskoy is the largest master of Russian realistic painting, the author of famous paintings included in the golden fund of Russian culture “Christ in the Desert”, “Stranger”, “inconsolable grief” and others. He created a gallery of portraits of prominent writers, artists, artists, public figures, such like: L.N. Tolstoy, I.I. Shishkin, P.M. Tretyakov, M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin, S.P. Botkin, V.S. The Voronezh Regional Art Museum, which represents its funds in the Russian Academy of Arts, celebrates 85 years since its foundation in 2018. It was founded in January 1933, it was based on the art collections of the Voronezh Regional Local Lore (formerly Provincial) Museum and the Museum of Antiquities and Fine Arts of Voronezh State University.
The creation and development of the Provincial Museum is associated with the names of representatives of the local nobility, the intelligentsia: the famous local historian priest S.E. Zverev, Vice-Governor, Chairman of the Voronezh Scientific Archival Commission and Chairman of the Construction Committee of the Provincial Museum of Count P.N. Apraksin, Countess S.V. Panina, writer A.I. Ertel, one of the founders of the surgical clinic in Voronezh K.F. Fedyaevsky, the famous mathematician-teacher A.P. Kiseleva. The collection began to form back in the 30s of the 19th century and was replenished with works transferred by the Mitrofanov Monastery and the Voronezh Cadet Corps, proceeds from private collections: collector P.G. In the post-revolutionary time, the museum collection was replenished with acquisitions from individuals, proceeds from authors, from nationalized estates, requisitioned households of the Voronezh province, the State Museum Fund, storage facilities of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Pushkin Museum, and the Hermitage. Currently, in the museum’s collection I have 22 thousand storage units, covering the widest time range from the 4th millennium BC. e. up to the 21st century.
Collection of works by I.N. Kramskoy developed in Voronezh in the 1920s and 1930s thanks to the participation of the artist’s son Anatoly Kramskoy and the assistance of professor Yu.I. Assumption. It was he who played the role of an intermediary in public relations of the city and the artist’s family. In the Voronezh Art Museum. I.N. Kramskoy kept over thirty works by this remarkable artist.
