The works of all graphic series on display together are a kind of retrospective of the artist’s career.

All of Chagall’s graphic works on display come from the collection of Mark and Pavel Bashmakov. MI Bashmakov is a famous mathematician, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, professor, member of the Russian Academy of Education. He collects works in the livre d’artiste style (French for "artist’s book"), that is, books with original graphics by famous artists of the 20th century. P. A. Bashmakov is a collector, owner of the PS Gallery, which provided the museum with this exhibition. Marc Chagall lived a very long and creatively rich life. He was born in the Russian Empire in the city of Liozno, Vitebsk province on July 7, 1887. He received his initial artistic training from a local painter in the city of Vitebsk. In 1906 he came to St. Petersburg, where in 1906-1909. attended a drawing school at the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, studied in the studios of famous artists. He lived in St. Petersburg-Petrograd, Vitebsk and Moscow, and in 1910-1914 - in Paris. After the revolution in 1918-1919. Chagall served as commissar of the CPSU (Bolsheviks) of the provincial department of public education in Vitebsk, decorated the city for the revolutionary holidays. Emigrated abroad in 1922, from 1923 he lived in France. During World War II, he and his family managed to leave for America, and in 1941-1947 he lived in New York. Then he returned to France, lived and worked in Paris or in the south of France,where he died on March 28, 1985 in Provence. Marc Chagall was one of the most famous avant-garde artists, whose merits received worldwide recognition during his lifetime.
