From September 8 to October 22, the first exhibition of contemporary art devoted to the blockade will be held in the Peter and Paul Fortress - audio and video installations by contemporary St. Petersburg media artists will be presented at the exhibition.
The research project “Silent Voices” aims to search for new visual images in a conversation about the blockade of Leningrad, new ways to speak on a controversial and complex topic that excites us, using modern technologies and discovering little-known sources.
The objective of the project is the restoration, manifestation, resumption of the voices of the blockade, various ways of building dialogue bridges between the modern audience and the layer of history, separated from us by decades of ideological censorship and self-censorship of witnesses (P. Barskova).
The project “Silent Voices” is a study of everyday life of a person in a besieged city, carried out on the basis of accessible historical publications, archival sources and private evidence. Using modern visual forms, the artists participating in the project talk about the stamina and strength of people, the tests of which have no examples in the history of World War II.
Now there are few survivors of the blockade, and the interview is a serious test for such elderly people. Diaries written during the siege are gradually becoming the only sources that you can read while at least getting closer to understanding the life of people in a besieged city. In diaries, as a rule, there is no criticism of the leadership of the city, there is no political reasoning, most of them are imbued with a desire to describe life in the city and everyday trials as accurately as possible.
