The exhibition "Terrani and Voices: Novokomum in Como - Club them. Zueva in Moscow. Similarities and Parallels at the Vanguard ”is dedicated to two masterpieces of 20th-century architecture: the Novokomum residential building in Como, Italy, and the Worker’s Club named after Zueva in Moscow. These two buildings, united by a similar compositional solution - a glazed cylindrical volume in the corner, and completely different in purpose, were designed and built almost simultaneously (in 1927-1930) in countries separated culturally, politically and economically. Their authors - Ilya Golosov (1883-1945) and Giuseppe Terrani (1904-1943) - belonged to different generations and had different professional education and experience, but both of them played a key role in the history of modern architecture.
The exhibition is a continuation of the international conference held in 2016 at the Como Union of Architects, and the exhibition of the same name, presented in Como on June 1, 2019. It includes the results of a scientific study devoted to the analysis of the works of Soviet and Italian architects, and also shows the cultural ties between Italy and the USSR. A comparison of two iconic buildings of the 20th century, which were repeatedly compared due to the similarity of glass cylinders, will for the first time be accompanied by original design documentation, archival sources and an analysis of the cultural and historical context. The work of Giuseppe Terrani, as well as Italian rationalism as a whole, will also be shown in our country for the first time. In addition, many project and archive materials about the club named after Zueva.
Among the exhibits will be presented authentic documents from the collection of the State Museum of Architecture named after A. V. Shchusev and funds of the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art. A photo project by Roberto Conte, prepared in 2016-2019, and a documentary film (script - Anna Vyazemtseva, filming process - Anton Ovcharov), including an interview with leading researchers of art and architecture of the avant-garde in Italy and Russia, were specially prepared for the exhibition.
According to curators of the project Alessandro De Magistris and Anna Vyazemtseva, “by inviting the audience to compare and reflect, the exhibition avoids simplifications and hasty comparisons, it introduces the viewer to two key works of architecture of the twentieth century and talks about the difficult events of the history of Italy and the Soviet Union that accompanied them between the two world wars.
