Exhibition of theatrical works of Yuri Lapshin. The exposition is based on pictorial and graphic sketches for dramatic and opera performances from 1970-1980 from the collection of the Perm Gallery, including those donated by the artist to the museum in 2018. The theatrical series is complemented by works from the artist’s workshop, created in recent years - in them Yuri Lapshin presents a modern interpretation of the performances put before.
“Yuri Lapshin is a theater artist, painter, graphic artist. Whatever he does - creativity, teaching, organizing exhibitions and art projects - everything turns out for Lapshin decisively, vividly and boldly. Resourcefulness, spatial thinking, ingenuity, rich imagination - all these qualities are inherent in Yuri Lapshin, a man of bright temperament, energy and positive. Acrylic and oil, tempera and felt-tip pen, collage and varnish - all techniques coexist in the works of the master. And not just side by side, but organically flow into each other and, finally, merge into a multidimensional universe. A true intellectual who deeply knows literature, art and life in all its manifestations, Yuri Nikolayevich from that generation of people and artists who reveals the philosophical meaning of events, images and phenomena and tirelessly presents them to the viewer.
Lapshin gave the theater 20 years of life. During this time he made more than 100 productions. Among them: “Love, Jazz and the Devil” by Y. Grushas (1978) at the Kizelovsky Drama Theater; The Forest by A. Ostrovsky (1981) and The Shadow by E. Schwartz (1982) at the Berezniki Drama Theater; “Farewell in June” by A. Vampilov (1980), “Communist” by E. Gabrilovich (1981), “Still, It Turns” by A. Khmelik (1982), “Svetlana” by V. Zhukovsky (1983) in Perm Youth Theater; “A small play in the lap of nature” by S. Lobozyorov (1984), “The Widowed Steamer” by I. Grekova and P. Lungin (1985), “The Boar” by V. Rozov (1987), “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by V. Shakespeare (1988)) in the Perm Drama Theater.
Arriving in Perm in 1976, a well-known established theater artist, who worked in different parts of a large country, Yuri Lapshin in a short time became a bright star in the Perm art and theater sky. Viewers with experience remember how fresh and unexpected the artist’s approach to the stage space was.
Having come to the theater by the will of fate and chance, having fallen in love with the magical world of the scene in his youth, the master remained faithful to him forever. The element of the theater is its element. And in the 1990s, when Lapshin left the theater, the theater could no longer leave it. “For a long time I was engaged in the theater, and, probably, the theater also became the basis, which formed a mixed focus in me. I received impulses from all sides - from drama, music, literature… ”, the master says about himself.
From this time on, the development of the theme of the “theater of life” in easel art becomes important for the artist. In his works of different periods, the pictorial basis is pronounced. The artist realizes his gift of a painter in a large number of easel works. Theater is Lapshin’s way of thinking, and therefore, in his paintings, relatives, acquaintances and friends, and often himself, become actors in comedy, tragedy or drama. In his works - from small pencil drawings to large-scale painting series - Lapshin builds a world that lives according to its own laws. This world is huge and always open to the viewer. The master is tireless… "
