Exhibition of Contemporary Christian Art "After the Icon" Automatic translate

July 19 at 18-30 in the Perm Art Gallery opens the exhibition "After the Icon." This is the second part of a project dedicated to contemporary Christian art. Following the exhibition of Perm icon painters “Perm Icon. XXI Century ”viewers will see the work of Moscow monumental artists experimenting with various techniques.

The exhibition “After the Icon” presents the works of Moscow monumental artists, made in various traditional and modern techniques: tempera, encaustic, mural on raw plaster, majolica, mosaic, sgraffito.

All works are united by a common idea, the essence of which is the rejection of the automatic copying of ancient samples that is widespread today in favor of creative processing and artistic search within the existing canon of church art.

The authors of the works presented in the exposition see church art as part of modern art, but create artistic images within the artistic tradition of the early Church. In search of a new artistic language, a new expression, they experiment with various traditional and modern techniques.

The participants of the exhibition - Moscow monumental painters, keen on the theme of Christian images in the visual arts - are sure that actualization of eternal themes in contemporary art makes it possible to take a fresh look at historical heritage. And besides, reflect on what church art is, what is a canon, and where do the boundaries of creative freedom go?

Exhibition curator:

Belikov Anton Vitalievich, Ph.D., specializing in Byzantine aesthetics (Moscow State University named after MV Lomonosov, Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences), monumental artist (Moscow State Art Institute named after Surikov), is engaged in religious art. He gives a series of lectures on art “Theology in Colors” in the lecture hall of the State Historical Museum. Collaborates with restoration workshops of the Novgorod State Museum-Reserve.
