On February 28, in the Nagornaya gallery of the Exhibition Halls of Moscow Association, a project of the experimental creative workshop PORAH and TSHR, an art photo section, dedicated to snow (Latin Nix) as an object of artistic photography, opens.
One of the important natural state elements that accompany winter in the northern latitudes is snow. European scientists were interested in its properties, and the history of the creation of winter landscapes with snow began back in the 17th century with the work of Dutch artists. The photograph refers to the image of winter from its inception. In the middle of the IX century, the first pictures of snowflakes appear in the works of photographers, and already in the 1880s they became a perennial object for micrographs of Wilson Bentley and macro photographs of Andrew Sigson.
However, only with the birth of instant photography in the early twentieth century, snow becomes the object of an artistic shooting. Photographers are most attracted by the contrast of the image, the play of shadows, the pronounced silhouettes on its background, the imprints of tracks on a snowy surface. Photographing snow becomes a subject of instruction. With the birth of abstract photography and photograms, there is an interest in the images, geometry and multiplicity of snowflake shapes.
Modern photography uses a huge arsenal of techniques to create works of art, to identify and convey in different genres and directions the aesthetic qualities of a well-known and beloved natural phenomenon.
The exposition of the exhibition consists of photographs of 21 artists, video art and installations demonstrating snow as a changing state (water vapor), which allows to reveal many meanings of the philosophy of nature and human life.
Within the framework of the project, it is planned to hold a round table with photo artists and art historians, as well as master classes with project participants.
