October 4 at 12:00 in the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts (Lenin St., 104, the main exposition) will be the grand opening of the exhibition "Ministers of Justice". Lithographs by Honore Daumier from the collection of the State Hermitage. ”
The exposition of the Hermitage exhibition acquaints Kaluga residents and visitors with the works of the outstanding French artist Honore Daumier (1808 - 1879). The richest creative heritage of the master is a kind of encyclopedia of French life in the 1830-1870s. He left wonderful political and social cartoons, beautiful illustrations and paintings from the life of modern society. Daumier constantly worked in lithography, made drawings for engraving on wood, did a lot of oil painting and watercolor, turned to sculpture. The artist’s legacy includes about 4,000 lithographs, over 900 engravings, over 700 paintings and drawings, and over 60 sculptures.
Honore Daumier is rightfully considered one of the largest masters of world graphics. The exhibition features 10 lithographs of Daumier from the series “Servants of Justice” (1845-1848). In its ideological orientation and skill, this remarkable series is among the best works of the artist, in which his satirical talent was fully manifested. Daumier was always struck by the falsity of bourgeois justice, the pomp and the insincerity of judges. In his youth, Honore worked as a messenger with a bailiff, later repeatedly came across representatives of the justice who had been persecuting the magazines Caricatur and Sariwari, and he himself was sentenced to jail for his political cartoons.
Since the late 1830s, the artist has repeatedly ridiculed lawyers and judges in various series. Lithographs, pen drawings, watercolors, paintings… Whatever technique the artist used, creating ever new versions of the judicial cycle! But only in the series “Servants of Justice” did he give a detailed picture of the French court, called upon to guard the interests of the ruling class. In his lithographs, permeated with genuine passion and ruthlessness, Daumier revealed the ostentatious side of the court, which is followed by money-grubbing, deceit, envy or, at best, indifference. By their artistic decision, lithographs of this series are distinguished by laconicism, expression, and a minimum of household details. Wide staircases, long corridors, conference rooms of the Palace of Justice - this is the arena where images of ornate and weaving intrigues of judges and lawyers in long fluttering robes appear. Turning to the topic of justice, the fine art of the 19th century did not create anything stronger than the works of Daumier.
Exhibition "Ministers of Justice". The lithographs of Honore Daumier from the collection of the State Hermitage ”are exhibited in the framework of the concluded Agreement on cooperation between the Kaluga Region and the State Hermitage. Earlier in Kaluga, exhibitions of one painting from the Hermitage collection were shown - “Peter von Hess. The Battle of Maloyaroslavets on October 12, 1812 "and" Antoine Watteau. Landscape with a waterfall. "
An exhibition of works by Honore Daumier from the collection of the State Hermitage Museum is among the most significant events that complete the anniversary year dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts.
A special program “Hermitage Days” and an extensive educational program, including thematic excursions and classes, have been prepared for the exhibition. Schedule and detailed information will be posted on the website http://artmuseum.kaluga.net/ and in museum groups on social networks.
