On September 22, in the Main building of the Irkutsk Regional Art Museum (Lenina st., 5), the first book-graphic exhibition "Tales from childhood illustrated by I. Ya. Bilibin and A. Vasnetsov", dedicated to the anniversaries of outstanding Russian artists Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin, began its work (145th birthday) and Apollinarius Mikhailovich Vasnetsov (165th birthday). The exposition presents especially valuable copies of books from the library of the Irkutsk Art Museum, for the first time bibliographic rarities, colorful art catalogs-albums are exhibited.
The exposition is decorated with the original and not yet published works of Ivan Bilibin "Ex-libris of N. A. Nikiforov" (exhibited for the first time) and the drawing by Apollinarius Vasnetsov "Wood rafting" (exhibited 20 years ago) from the museum’s graphics fund.
Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin (1876-1942) - an outstanding book and theater artist, a student of Ilya Repin, one of the best illustrators of the Russian fairy tale, the creator of a special type of illustrated book: large format with large color drawings. The artist acts as the author of drawings and all decorative elements of the publication: cover, initials, a special type of font and ornamental decorations. Many people remember works from childhood: illustrations for fairy tales "Marya Morevna", "White Duck", "Sister Alyonushka and Brother Ivanushka", "Vasilisa the Beautiful", "Ivan Tsarevich" and "The Frog Princess". Thanks to the special vision of the folk images of Baba Yaga, the Serpent Gorynych, heroes, Ivan Tsarevich, we remember his illustrations for the fairy tales of Alexander Pushkin "The Tale of Tsar Saltan", "The Tale of the Golden Cockerel", "The Tale of the Fisherman and the Fish". Fairy tale heroes - good and evil, beautiful and ugly - taught to love goodness and beauty,hate evil, cowardice, injustice.
During the Great Patriotic War, Ivan Yakovlevich refused to be evacuated and remained in besieged Leningrad. He died on February 7, 1942.
Apollinary Mikhailovich Vasnetsov (1856-1933) - Russian artist, painter, graphic artist, theater artist, academician, member of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions, the Union of Russian Artists. Participant of the exhibitions "World of Art" and "36 Artists". Was close to the Abramtsevo circle. Younger brother of Viktor Vasnetsov. He entered the history of Russian painting as a master of the monumental and epic landscape, praising the nature of the Urals and Siberia, and as the creator of the genre of history, showing ancient Moscow. He created a whole series of paintings, drawings and watercolors that recreated the image of the ancient capital. He studied painting with Viktor Vasnetsov, and also with V.D. Polenov, I.E. Repin, M.M. Antokolsky, V.M. Maksimov. In the early period 1880-1890. painted mainly landscapes. Fame was brought by the works of the 1900s, in which he tried to reproduce the appearance of pre-Petrine wooden Moscow.
The works of A. M. Vasnetsov are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum, the State Historical Museum, the Museum of the History of the City of Moscow, the Abramtsevo Museum-Reserve, in Moscow there is the A. M. Vasnetsov Museum-Apartment.
