In the Moscow exhibition hall "Gallery A3" opens a joint Russian-Italian project "Between the Sign and the Painting. Amarcord. " It is represented by artists Andrei Volkov (Moscow) and Silvio Cattani (Rovereto).
The exhibition provides an opportunity to compare the features of modern abstract painting in Russia and Italy. More than 60 paintings and graphic works in various techniques on canvas, paper, aluminum and composite materials will be shown, as well as an installation by Silvio Cattani, created specifically for the Moscow project. Most of the works were created in the period 2017-18, and are exhibited in Moscow for the first time.
Volkov’s compositions differ in materiality of color and author’s texture. The artist uses a mirror surface, which reflects the surrounding world and an observer, changing the space of the picture with his presence. The viewer is invited by the artist to interact, in the process of which there is contact with the reality of abstract art.
Cattani’s painting is distinguished by a love of the sign, which the artist defines as “materia prima”, and the intensity of color - extremely bright colors that transform into slow twilight or deep night. His language is a reflection on the “codes” of our memory. “I am an abstractionist with some memories,” the artist says about himself.
“Their works are characterized by a desire to attract, familiarize observers with the world of their visual language, referring to the primary experiences, unconscious past experiences and reflections of our complex present.” (Remo Forkini)
The hotel theme of the Moscow part of the project is indicated by the subtitle Amarcord (I recall) - with an unconditional reference to the great film Fellini, which plays the role of a semantic tuning fork for both authors. Artists explore the effects of memory on their own creativity and everyday life. The round table, which will be held during the exhibition, will discuss the theme of similarities and differences of the phenomenon of "remembering" as a function, conscious process or illusion. A separate topic will be the role of family history in the work of each author.
