In the Volgo-Vyatka branch of the Pushkin Museum im. A. Pushkin (NCCA Nizhny Novgorod - Arsenal) opens the exhibition “Shukhov. Formula of architecture ". The exhibition, which is the result of cooperation between the Shchusev State Museum of Architecture (MUAR), Arsenal, the United Metallurgical Company and the OMK-Uchastiye charitable foundation, ideologically continues the Moscow project of the same name, which took place in MUAR at the end of 2019. The focus of attention is the figure of the great engineer, personifying the golden age of the Russian engineering school in the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries, and his design. The opening of the exposition is timed to coincide with the 800th anniversary of Nizhny Novgorod and the 125th anniversary of the All-Russian Industrial and Art Exhibition, which became a triumphant one for Vladimir Shukhov.
Shukhov’s office archive arrives in Nizhny Novgorod - it is not only a tribute to the city, but also a symbolic combination of the design laboratory of an engineer and an architect with a cult place for his heritage. Vladimir Grigorievich gained fame in Nizhny Novgorod - at the All-Russian Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896, he first demonstrated his author’s designs. In 1897, Shukhov designed a sheet-rolling shop that used the world’s first double-curved steel shell. It was built in the city of Vyksa, there is also a 40-meter Shukhovskaya water tower. The hyperboloid supports of the power line across the Oka, erected in 1927–1929, are recognized by experts as the most perfect designs of Shukhov. Two hyperboloid structures discovered near Nizhny Novgorod - fire towers - will also be presented to the public.
The exhibition will show more than 200 exhibits of Shukhov’s creative archive from Russian and foreign collections - graphics, models, manuscripts, photographs. open mesh and lightweight structures. The comparative approach allows one to appreciate the scale and significance of Vladimir Shukhov’s discoveries.
Within the framework of the exhibition there will be shown a 3D film "The Stereoworld of Engineer Shukhov", the authors of which tried to cinematically present the unique photographs of Vladimir Grigorievich. In a kind of visual diary, everyday life in Russia at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries is recorded.
The parallel program of the exhibition includes: lectures on Vladimir Shukhov, his legacy and influence on architecture and visual arts of the 20th century; "Family weekend" for children and parents who will be able to understand the engineering secrets of the master and create their own architectural objects; as well as inclusive events.
“Vladimir Shukhov first became famous as a unique engineer and architect in Nizhny Novgorod, which is why he became its cultural hero forever,” says Anna Gor, director of the Arsenal. "In the year of the eight-hundredth anniversary, when our city comprehends the past and projects the future, we cannot do without Shukhov’s work, therefore we present it so broadly and on a large scale as a phenomenon that intensively nourishes modern culture."
“For the Museum of Architecture, this project is incredibly important,” notes MUAR director Elizaveta Likhacheva, “because the Museum keeps the history of Russian and Russian architecture and is not limited to Moscow. We are very pleased that the exhibition will be able to be seen by residents of Nizhny Novgorod, one of the key places where modern Russian architecture was formed. I really hope that this project will arouse interest, that Shukhov’s work, his ideas, his absolutely incredible, absolutely visionary solutions will be in demand and relevant in today’s reality. "
“The history of the plant of the United Metallurgical Company in the city of Vyksa, Nizhny Novgorod Region is connected with the name of Vladimir Shukhov,” says Irina Sedykh, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the OMK-Uchastiye Charitable Foundation. - On the site of the plant there are two objects of cultural heritage - a water tower from the beginning of the 20th century and the vault of a sheet-rolling shop of the end of the 19th century. OMK is building Russia’s first industrial and tourist park in Vyksa. The unique structures of Shukhov will be transferred to this park from the territory of the enterprise and will become available to all people. We are pleased with the new stage of cooperation with the Museum of Architecture and the Nizhny Novgorod Arsenal and the opportunity to support an exhibition that will bring Nizhny Novgorod residents and guests of the city closer to the architectural and engineering genius of Vladimir Shukhov.
