On October 19, the Museum of Moscow will open the exhibition "Northern River Station", timed to coincide with the opening on September 5, 2020 of this unique architectural monument after a lengthy restoration. The exposition will include guidebooks on the Moskva River and postcards from the 1930s-1950s, get acquainted with the "Schedule of the Fleet of the Moscow River Suburban Shipping Company for Navigation in 1935", get an idea of what the river tram looked like in 1952. Visitors will also see photographs of Naum Granovsky, Lev Raskin and Emanuel Evzerikhin with views of the Northern River Station from the collection of the Museum of Moscow. The exhibition will feature a collection of souvenir dishes depicting the Northern River Station and hydraulic structures of the port of five seas, which were the most popular Moscow souvenir in the 1950s-1980s along with Red Square, the Kremlin and the Bolshoi Theater.
The Northern River Station was opened on May 2, 1937. The building of the new station impressed with the scale of architecture and richness of decor: the main staircase and terraces - "decks" with arches, fountains, palm trees, which were planted a week before the opening. The lobby and the rooftop restaurant were decorated with custom-made shell and lily-of-the-valley lamps, and the facade was decorated with porcelain medallions with nautical themes and iconic objects from the 1930s. The composition was crowned with a spire with a weather vane inlaid with Ural gems. At the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris, the authors of the project - architects Alexei Rukhlyadev and Vladimir Krinsky - received a prestigious award.
The exhibition will run until November 22. Free admission.
