From November 13 to December 2, 2015, the personal exhibition of the artist Savva Kornyshev “RULES OF MEMORY” will be held in the gallery space “FotoLoft” - an attempt to understand how memories arise and disappear and fix them in images, signs, lines and energies.
16 works made using the stereo-vario technique speak with the viewer about the riddles of memory and the nature of memories. It all started a few years ago, when driven by a desire to know the nature of memory, Savva talked a lot with people, including its violations, on the subject of the ability of consciousness to preserve images. Later, he himself was at the line separating the clear world from random perception. All this experience turned his worldview as a person and as an artist, forcing him to conclude that the most vivid images that appear in our memory are almost always associated with deep happy experiences, loved ones, and significant life events.
Vitaly Patsyukov, art critic, curator of the NCCA:
“The artistic dimensions of the visual culture of Savva Kornyshev are in constant dialogue with the coordinates of immediate reality. In their layered spaces, the phenomenality of photography, the strategy of sign systems and the form of light energies collide. The imagery of these integrated technologies pulsating in their internal processes turns into a special state, revealing continuous phase changes in a static completeness.
Formalized conflicts of “flat” computer information and photographic space, indicating original three-dimensionality, create a confident visual-semantic context. Within its extended limits, the reality of the event details - a village window, a plate with blueberries, an apple tree branch, a camera or a castle - loses its boundaries and becomes a living organism, returning its primary states. The hieroglyphic text of the works of Savva Kornyshev reveals a paradoxical inner rhyme with classic photograms, forcing the viewer to literally go through the informational obscurations and from the observation area to the participation space.
These features of Savva Kornyshev’s compositions give them the right to become original installations if they are converted into 3D projections. An ordinary telephone set in the artist’s photo angles, shining with its dial through the “tracing-paper” of illusory artifacts, becomes inseparable from the everyday miracle, recalling the magical readymades of Marcel Duchamp. Plunging into the emerging spatial drama, we discover in the world of naturalness and simplicity, in direct contact with objects of ordinary reality, unique “sublime” forms that can transmit the organic connections of ethical enlightenment and an ecological artistic gesture. ”
Stasya Dyomina, curator of the exhibition “Rules Of Memory”:
“In her works, Savva materializes ideas with the help of complex, multi-component techniques and techniques, reflecting on what reality and memory are, as part of it. Jean Baudrillard saw the therapeutic function of art in the return of reality. But the artist asks us questions: what is reality itself? And what is memory, as part of this personal reality? Is there a way to convey someone’s reality so that it becomes tangible to others? Capture snatches of memories inspired by dreams or advertising glances from a car window, accidental touch or the smell of green apples…
Something visible or felt by us is still here, but in the next instant it is melting, turning into an oscillating neon trace, only into a vibration of meaning and feeling. The author wants to catch this slip by all means… To find at least some rules of memory. After all, when the image disappears, only phantom signs and hieroglyphs will remain on the surface, which we cannot unravel. ”
About the artist
Having received a "Stroganov" education, and since the mid-1990s, having worked as a production designer at Hollywood animation studios for almost 20 years, Savva has been forming and honing his own language in modern art all this time, able to reflect the invisible - sounds and rhythms, smells and sensations, dreams and streams of memories.
