The exhibition, which will be a continuation of Jean-Hubert Martin’s project "There are strange rapprochements…", will open on March 9 in the Main Building of the Pushkin Museum im. A. S. Pushkin. Its authors are members of the youth team of the museum direction “Pushkinsky. Youth". Young people got the opportunity to explore the museum’s collection and create their own exhibition project with the support of a French curator. Part of the exhibition will be implemented online and available to viewers on the website.
The authors of the exhibition offer to see the works from the museum’s collection in the context of human relations, psychological states and social restrictions. The project is divided into seven chapters, three of which will be presented on the second floor of the Main Museum Building. Each theme stated in the title of the chapters invites you on a visual journey through the world of overlapping images connected by different visual associations. So the exposition from the story becomes a game where you can perceive objects outside the knowledge of the context and the name of the author, which habitually seem necessary.
"Frame to Frame" The first section of the exhibition is a conversation not only about physical limitations, but also about the social, ethical and psychological limits that we set for ourselves. Sometimes window and picture frames become a metaphor for internal restrictions in art. The paintings of the old masters in this section meet with objects from the workshop of Dmitry Krasnopevtsev, and the museum turns into a platform for discussions about what can be called works of art.
"You can’t work to rest." In this section, the works reflect the cyclical nature of the modern world, which moves in a circle of change of work, rest and work again, where our peace is disturbed by anxiety. Works by Rodchenko, Monet and Gauguin are combined here with exhibits from the photography art collection, and objects of decorative and applied art seem to bring the images of paintings into the material world.
"Gesture". This section does not have a narrative plot. Inspired by the section of Martin’s exhibition "The Observer is Being Observed", the authors invite the audience to enter into a new game with the heroes of paintings and sculptures and follow the gestures of the characters in the works.
The second part of the exhibition will be implemented in an online format, in some way continuing the action of the same name #samsebemartin, which was held as part of the exhibition of Jean-Hubert Martin "There are strange rapprochements…". Each visitor to the museum during the action could look for visual similarities, associations and generalizations at the exposition and in everyday life. Four more chapters will be available on a separate exhibition website #SamSebeMarten: "War and Peace", "Intimacy", "Principles and Seductions" and "Soul of Gesture". Thus, the first chapter is a reflection on the constant alternation of scientific and religious paradigms. The second explores the relationship between people through the images of painting, sculpture and photography. The third draws our attention to the duality of most ethical concepts. And the last chapter, “The Soul of Gesture,” is a visual study of the perception of movements habitual to the eye.
