April 25, 2017 at 16.00 in the halls of the Russian Academy of Arts at the address: st. Prechistenka, 21 opens an exhibition of works by the People’s Artist of Russia, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Arts Lev Matyushin, dedicated to his 85th birthday.
The composition of the exposition includes selected sculptural works representing the main stages of the artist’s creative career, which he himself prefers to count from the late 1960s.
Lev Nikolayevich Matyushin is one of the leading sculptors of the Moscow school. He actively works in easel and monumental plastic, most often creating portraits and genre compositions.
The monuments he created were installed in Russian cities and abroad. In the 1960-1970s, he created memorial ensembles dedicated to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War in Moscow, Podolsk, cities of Uzbekistan. In 1996, he took part in the reconstruction of the artistic decoration of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, where he created the figure of Theodosius of the Caves.
The artist refers to the images of prominent scientists, actors, writers, fellow sculptors and athletes. These are the images of S. V. Rakhmaninov, N. I. Vavilov, V. M. Dronov, O. K. Komov, N. I. Niss-Goldman, A. T. Tvardovsky and many others. Close attention to man, the desire to penetrate into his inner world, convey character, are reflected in his works. The author’s vision of the hero creates an unusual in plastic and content image that does not lose portrait similarity. Such is the composition "Cosmos" - an expressive portrait of K. E. Tsiolkovsky - an old man in a nightgown, peering into the sky. The group portrait of Nadezhda and Osip Mandelstam, compositionally consonant with the iconography of Pieta, which symbolizes the difficult life path traveled by this couple, is also interesting.
Balanced composition, harmony and inner rhythm in the works of Lev Nikolaevich are combined with impressionistic techniques of working with the texture of marble and bronze.
So the art historian L. V. Marts writes about L. N. Matyushin: “Today Lev Nikolayevich Matyushin is an actively working artist, one of the few, the keeper and continuer of the traditions of the living, developing, classical Moscow school of sculpture created by outstanding masters of Russian plastic the first decades of the twentieth century, which absorbed and in its own way reworked the experience and innovative searches of contemporary European art. "
L.N. Matyushin was born in 1932 in Moscow, began to master mastery in his youth, at the Art and Craft School of Stone Carving, continuing his studies in 1952-1960. at the Moscow Artists and Higher School of Arts (formerly Stroganov) with sculptors R. R. Iodko, S. L. Rabinovich, E. F. Belashova, G. I. Motovilov, and architect L. M. Kholmyansky. Since 1960, he has been constantly participating in Moscow, All-Russian, foreign and international exhibitions.
Lev Nikolayevich for a long time passed his experience to the younger generation, teaching sculptors at the Abramtsevo Art College in 1960-1963, at the All-Russian Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1993-2003.
The works of L. V. Matyushin are in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Murmansk Art Gallery, other Russian museums and in foreign collections (Italy, Germany).
