The Russian Academy of Arts presents an exhibition of works by the academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, People’s Artist of Russia Dmitry Sandzhiev, “Bathing in Time”. The exposition presents about 30 paintings and graphic works created by the author mainly over the past 10 years.
Kalmyk by nationality, he was born and raised in harsh Siberia, and Dmitry was already a young man in his historical homeland - Kalmykia.
Dmitry Sandzhiev began his career in the late 1970s - early 80s as a graphic artist. In 1974 he graduated with honors from the Yaroslavl Art College. In the period from 1975 to 1981 he studied at the Moscow Art Institute. V.I. Surikova, after which he continued his studies at the Creative Workshop of the USSR Academy of Arts under the direction of O. G. Vereisky (1981-1984). In the early 1980s, at the second International Triennale of Drawing by Young Artists in Nuremberg, the diploma work of Dmitry Sandzhiev’s “Widow Shepherd” was awarded a special prize.
Having thus drawn attention to himself in his student years with creative self-sufficiency and the mystery of nature, the artist continues to amaze the viewer with an infinity of figurative improvisations. The skill of the graphics in an amazing way makes the black-and-white drawing luminiferous, acquiring the features of a unique picturesqueness that arises due to the merger of tones, midtones and quarter tones. So, the lines and nuances of strokes, on the one hand, reflect the pictures of real steppe life, and on the other hand, give the viewer a sense of the timeless events of this action.
The universal talent of Sandzhiev, manifested in various areas of graphics - from detailed thematic cycles to book illustrations, was embodied with no less force in the field of painting.
The fantastic realism of the artist’s creativity is in tune with the cosmic aspirations of the human mind, the forebodings of the appearance of parallel worlds in the vastness of the universe. His exquisite color paintings possess powerful energy that draws the viewer into an imaginary, newly created world, contrary to traditional ideas and knowledge.
Behind the external ease of reading and perceiving Sandzhiev’s works, one can guess the significant symbolism of the images he creates. The artist’s world is filled with many mysterious characters, invented characters. The special poetization and metaphorical nature of his work speaks of the richness of imagination, which has absorbed both life experience and the experience of generations that came to the master from the depths of centuries. The truth in the paintings of Dmitry Sandzhiev is a figurative fantasy leading to the search for a harmonious beginning of life. In an effort to convey the spirit of our time with its sophisticated socio-cultural codes through images of world culture, the artist saturates his work with a store of meanings and associations, not always directly arising from the real meaning of the plots.
A characteristic feature of the master’s painting is the trinity of utterance (triptych), which also allows you to overcome the picture-interior character of easel painting.
The artist’s works are in such famous museums and art galleries as the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Museum of the East, the State Russian Museum, the world-famous collection of Ludwig (Germany), the collection of Faber-Castell (Nuremberg, Germany), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (USA) and in many other museums, art galleries and private collections in Russia and around the world.
