By the example of one exposition, the authors show a model of the whole art Universe, embodied in all the variety of types of fine art - from the traditional realistic to the actual. The project participants are not just young artists with high potential, achievements and skill. More importantly, for most of them, the portrait genre is the main one in their work, or somehow it appears in it as an integral element.

Today, the theme of the portrait is more acute and interesting than ever: as never before, the artist is allowed to create and create in all styles and techniques, this is an unprecedented experience for both the creator and the viewer. The exposition "Portrait 21 / XXI" is a private investigation (and research) of what is meant by a portrait in the modern world. The curator, Alexandra Shchegoleva, argues:

“Is the portrait the face of a man? A metaphorical image of his soul? An individually taken phenomenon (portrait of a cat, “portrait” of a chair)? A portrait by G. Archimboldo, composed of vegetables, or portraits of Magritte, where “everything is not what it seems”? Or, perhaps, the “portrait” is not even a painting, but an Idea… the reason that made Oscar Wilde and Nikolai Gogol write their immortal works - “Dorian Gray” and the “tabletop” story of all artists “Portrait”?

Whenever there is a need for this genre - whether in Ancient Egypt, or in the caves of a primitive man - we have known about it for a very long time. For thousands of years, artists have created such a number of masterpieces in this area, in so different ways, in surprisingly diverse techniques and manners, they talked about how you can interpret the face, mask, image, appearance (and so on ad infinitum) that, having reached our time, by itself the word "portrait" has already passed into the category of symbols.
