From June 21 to July 30, the Gallery of Classical Photography will host an exhibition of works by recognized master of American landscape photography Christopher Burkett, in whose works the technical skill of printing is closely intertwined with a sense of authentic transmission of the natural conditions of nature.
Golden River Basin, Oregon, 1983
For over 25 years, Christopher has been shooting landscapes full of life and painting, doing it with clarity and magnificence, which earned him the name of one of the best photographers of our time working in the genre of color photography.
Visitors to Burkett’s exhibitions often say with pleasure that their feelings are akin to looking at paintings, although they know that they have pictures in front of them. At the same time, his photographs do not imitate the “pictorial” effects of brush strokes, color mixing, or deliberate riot of colors. Christopher not only captures the external appearance of things - like the great painters, he penetrates deeply into the mystery of the external appearance of nature and embodies it in works of art that reveal its inner light and living structure.
Great Sand Dunes at Sunset, Colorado, 1980
The best photographs of the master have a feeling of almost mystical connection with the audience - this feeling can be experienced only by directly viewing the original print. In the era of digital reproduction of works of art, the craft component disappears from the skills of the photographer, however, some masters continue the tradition of artistic color photo printing. And photos of Christopher Burkett restore in our eyes the aura of an original work of art. There is light and life in them, arising only at the hands of an outstanding master who has perfectly mastered his art.
Wild Red Maple and Fog, New Hampshire, 1989
Photographs by Christopher Burkett are made in a rare for today technique of direct projection printing from transparencies on special Cibachrome photo paper. The prints differ not only in impressive sizes (up to 100x150 cm), but also in characteristic color contrast. Spectators, shocked by the beauty of these images, often refuse to believe that they have photos. But that is exactly so.
