The exhibition presents a series of monumental growth portraits of prominent personalities from different eras and countries. For many years, the artist’s attention has been attracted by philosophers, writers, politicians and scientists. The artist notes: “I constantly learn from the greats of the past, enrich my vision, soul and creativity with the depth of their thoughts, stylistic embodiment, picturesque delight…“ A gallery of Russian figures occupies a special place in the work of Yuri Knyazev: Rublev, Peter the Great, Pushkin, Dostoevsky, Lomonosov, Suvorov, Beetles. In the painting, the masters also reflected the images of contemporaries: Sakharov, Solzhenitsyn, Yeltsin, Putin and many others.

Visitors to the gallery will be able to see 40 works created by the artist in different years.

At the beginning of his career in the 1960s, Yuri Knyazev was looking for new and original approaches to painting. The result of searches and experiments was the “Cross-Hieroglyph-Sign” method, which allowed the artist to embody a special author’s concept of a historical portrait. The hero of the picture is depicted on compositional lines in a cross, circle or pyramid, saturating the space of the canvas with attributes of a specific historical character.

Yuri Knyazev was born on May 6, 1927 in Vyatka. In 1943 he voluntarily entered the Northern Fleet’s Young School on Solovki. He was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 2nd degree, medals of F. Ushakov and "For the Defense of the Soviet Arctic". Graduated with honors from the Moscow Art College of Memory in 1905 and the V.I. Surikov Institute. Member of the Union of Artists of the USSR since 1964. Member of All-Union, Republican and zonal exhibitions, awarded numerous prizes and diplomas. The main works are in private collections in Germany, Italy, China, Canada, Moscow, Tashkent, Kirov, Stary Oskol, Arkhangelsk, Pyatigorsk.
