November 1 in the gallery "Belyaevo" Association "Exhibition Halls of Moscow" will be the official opening of the exhibition "Paustovsky and Cinema." The project was prepared jointly with the Moscow Literary Museum-Center K.G. Paustovsky as part of a citywide program celebrating the 125th anniversary of the writer with the participation of the State Central Museum of Cinema and the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art.
Screen versions of the works of Konstantin Paustovsky and his work as a screenwriter are a significant part of the writer’s creative biography. Films based on the scripts of Paustovsky occupy a worthy place in the history of Russian cinema and have a difficult fate. The Paustovsky and Cinema exhibition reveals the history of the author’s complex creative relationship with cinema. The conceptual core of the exposition was the writer’s work on the films: Kara-Bugaz (1935, directed by Alexander Razumny), Lermontov (1943, directed by Albert Handelstein) and Northern Tale (1960, directed by Eugene Andrikanis).

The exhibition tells about the painful search for artistic compromises while working on scripts, about the mysterious story of the “Kara-Bugaz” film “disappearing”, about complex film expeditions in the Caspian deserts and filming in Stalinabad, about the success of the “Northern Story”, which attracted thirty million viewers, about the anger of Stalin and the enthusiastic reviews of Henri Barbusse, about the criticism of contemporaries and the recognition of film historians after decades of oblivion.
