The Center for Contemporary Culture “Bread Factory” (Vladivostok, 9 Semenovskaya St.) presented the first exhibition “Opening, Opening”. In their works, contemporary artists working in the field of science art have proposed various interpretations of the process of producing knowledge about the world in which we live. The exhibition runs until August 10, 2018.
Participants of the exhibition were the art group “Where the dogs run”, :: vtol ::, Nikita Zhukovsky, Regina de Miguel (SpainGermany), the duet Shinseungback Kimyonghun (Republic of Korea), the duet Mariano Sardon and Mariano Sigman (Argentina), Lee Friedlander (USA), Ben Rivers and Ben Russell, Sasha Spazal (Slovenia). All these artists use advanced scientific achievements in their work and collaborate with modern scientists and researchers from various fields of knowledge.
The curator of the exhibition is Andrei Vasilenko, researcher at the V.K. Arsenyev Museum, critic, curator of film programs at the Pacific Meridian IFF, author of projects in the field of contemporary art and cinema. “Modern scientific discoveries are constantly being reviewed, supplementing the picture of the world. And it is precisely in the art space that these changes become the most powerful and distinct. Of course, people who are engaged in science art are not scientists. But they help us find new ways to get to know the world in which we live, ”said Andrei Vasilenko.
“How do we know the world around us, the diversity of which is revealed only occasionally to us? How do we think that which is beyond our sensory experience? How do scientific knowledge and technology change our picture of the world? Why do we trust the explanation of how reality is built around us, often not always understanding the essence of scientific theories? ”- these and other questions the artists pose to the viewer.
This exhibition project is an attempt to comprehend the symbolic nature of scientific knowledge, allowing to discover the diversity of the world, which is not accessible to sensory experience: from the level of microorganisms to the sphere where the laws of classical mechanics are not applicable.
Using the metaphor of the “beyond,” we give the status of elusive reality that dimension of positive science, the primary access to which is possible only through speculative practices. The process of cognition comes to the fore, by which we mean the production of evidence of the interaction between the variety of things that make up this world.
Together with the exhibition, the center of modern culture “Bread factory” was opened in a full-fledged format. “There are practically no institutions like ours in Siberia or the Far East. We intend to become a leader in the development of technological art, to enable residents and visitors of the city to make a full-fledged idea of this direction of contemporary art. And educational lectures and developing master classes will be a great opportunity for children and adults to expand their knowledge in various fields of modern culture and science, ”said Olga Burasova, chief curator of the Bread Factory Center for Contemporary Culture.
The general partner of the exhibition project "Opening, Opening" and the center of modern culture "Bread factory" is the company "Vladkhleb".
“The 115-year history of the Vladkhleb company is inextricably linked with the history of the city and its development. Last year we restarted the Bread Museum, and this year we took an even more serious step and opened a full-fledged institution. “Bakery” is intended to become a new point of attraction for residents and visitors of the city, a place where anyone can find something to do for their mind, to explore the processes and technologies that lie behind familiar things, ”said Dmitry Shinkarenko, CEO of Vladkhleb.
