More than forty amazing and strange objects - paintings and sculptures, lamps and armchairs, tables and chairs. At the same time, these are not quite paintings and sculptures, partly tables and chairs, not chairs at all, and not even lamps. The works of children from the studio of DEZ No. 5 are adult in terms of artistic quality, scale and manufacturing techniques, ready-to-use contemporary art: you can watch huge sculptures, play interesting objects, and have to think about texts. This exhibition is the result of almost a year of work, the source of inspiration and limitation of which has become OR-AT-MENT.
The ornament is familiar to us, and we hardly notice it. Unless, when buying clothes or utensils, while discussing repairs, traveling around Greece, or carefully examining objects exhibited in the halls of the Museum of Decorative, Applied and Folk Art. The ornament repeats the same elements of the image, separates or denotes borders, edges, lines, dividing plots or functions. An ornament is a sequence of signs and, in this sense, a language. No wonder it has both rhythm and music…
It is very important that the ornament is for beauty, for harmonization, for good taste and pronounced style.
All this, children and adults in the studio DEZ number 5 last fall discussed with interest. But very soon it became clear that everyone understands the ornament in their own way and, as a result, it turns out OR-AT-MENT — opening works telling stories, sometimes useful in everyday life.
The names of the works speak for themselves: “Cat-chair”, “Ornament Factory”, “Web - a fishing net”, “Fish-elephant-elephant-fish”, “My Name remembered its Pattern”, “3D-dragon table”, “Chicken” in the matrix ”,“ Molecular hat-bearer ”,“ Manifestations of doubt ”,“ Infinity ”,“ Flying jester ”, lamp“ Yummy ”,“ Electricity wave ”,“ Intake ”,“ Take low road ”and many others, about a blanket with tentacles and fantastic animals, about "animal architecture" and overcoming self-doubt.
It is no accident that the exhibition, filled with such a variety of meanings, ideas and opportunities for the viewer, is exhibited in the beautiful halls of the DPI Museum. The association “Exhibition Halls of Moscow” and DEZ No. 5 offered the museum this collection precisely because many non-applied objects made by children can be used as applied ones, and the theme “ornament”, which would seem historically defined and strict, turns out to be fresh, open and emphasizing the limitless possibilities of free creativity.
Every Thursday, throughout the summer, from 18 to 20:30, the Ornament workshops open to all, organized by the Moscow Exhibition Halls Association and DEZ Studio No. 5, will be held at the exhibition. Here, children and adults, inspired by our project, will be able to create new works, drink tea and participate in discussions, communicate with artists, architects and designers, make plans for the future (topics and stories of work in workshops will be announced on the organizers’ websites and on social networks).
