From May 15, in the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts (104, Lenin Street, the main exhibition), an exhibition of one painting “Volkov N.N. "Pavilion of mechanization at ENEA".
On the 80th anniversary of the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy, the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts presents the work of Nikolai Nikolayevich Volkov (1897-1974) "Pavilion of Mechanization at the Exhibition of Economic Achievements". Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, a talented art theorist and author of fundamental works on the theory of composition and color in painting, N. N. Volkov is no less famous for his highly professional watercolor graphics.
In the picture presented, the artist captured the view of the pavilion "Mechanization" of the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition of 1939 (the ensemble will receive the name VDNH in 1959). The pavilion was designed by architects V. S. Andreev and spouses I. G. Taranov and N. A. Bykova. It was a huge boathouse - a hangar with a cylindrical vault, intended for the construction and repair of airships and aerostats. The height of the boathouse was 24 meters, which is commensurate with an 8-storey residential building, its length is 150 meters, which is one and a half times the size of a football field! The main facade of this building of steel, glass and concrete overlooked the area of mechanization. The design was decorated with bas-reliefs on the theme of labor with motifs of ears of corn, stars, sickles and hammers, made by the workshop of Merkurov. Agricultural machinery was located along the alley on two tiers and was well viewed from many points of the exhibition ensemble.
The exhibition, suspended during the Great Patriotic War, was resumed in 1954. The architects completed the pavilion with a two-story domed hall. The facade from the side of the square is made of mirror glass and is supplemented with a monumental arch with two faceted towers, on which 8-meter sculptures "Tractor driver" and "Combineer" rise. Against the background of success in the exploration of outer space, in 1967 the exhibition "Cosmos" opened in the pavilion. Despite the difficult for the VDNKh 1990-2000s, the liquidation of many pavilions and the loss of valuable exhibits of the space exposition, in April 2018, after a large-scale restoration, the cosmos and aviation center was opened for visitors.
The exhibition will run until June 16.
