The main exposition of the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts (104 Lenina St.) will open the exhibition of one painting by Apollon Nikolayevich Mokritsky "Portrait of a Woman" 1841.
180 years ago, a graduate of the Academy of Arts, the portrait painter Apollo Mokritsky (1810–1870) painted "Portrait of a Woman", which is now in the museum’s collection. Mokritsky was lucky to learn from the leading masters of his time - Alexei Venetsianov and Karl Bryullov. The composition depicting a young woman in the setting of a theatrical box was made in the style of the bright "Bryullov" academicism. The artist places a tall mirror to the right of the model, which allows admiring not only her face from the front, but also the silhouette in profile. The most curious thing about the portrait is the two signatures. On the upper part of the mirror frame there is Mokritsky’s autograph, and in the lower left corner - the signature "Vaskov". According to researchers, the second artist could complete the work of Mokritsky, who in 1841 was preparing for a trip to Italy.
After returning from Rome, Apollon Nikolaevich found his vocation in pedagogy and, being a professor at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, raised several generations of famous artists, including Ivan Shishkin, Konstantin Makovsky, Vasily Perov, Ippolit Pryanishnikov and others.
The exhibition runs from June 9 to July 28, 2021.
