An exhibition of one painting “Grigory Myasoedov (1834-1911)“ The Old Man-Italian ”of the 1860s will begin work on January 23 at the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts (103 Lenin St.) "
Grigory Myasoedov (1834-1911) - a famous Russian artist of the second half of the XIX century, a master of the peasant genre, one of the initiators and a founding member of the Association of Wanderers.
G. Myasoedov was born with. Pankovo (Tula province.) In the family of a poor landowner, early lost his mother. Having quarreled with his father and not graduating from high school, in ser. 1850s moved to Petersburg. There he entered the Academy of Arts (studied under A. Markov and T. Neff), where he studied until 1862. A large gold medal gave the artist the opportunity to continue his education in Europe from 1863 to 1869. Upon returning to his homeland, G. Myasoedov, together with N. Ge, initiated the creation of TPHV, and later its leading participant and organizer of exhibitions. Since the 1900s lived in Poltava and Crimea.
The most significant works of G. Myasoedov are paintings of the post-reform village (Zemstvo dines (1872), Strada (1887), and others), in which he reflected the life, beauty, and inner strength of the simple Russian people.
The Kaluga work “The Old Man-Italian” was written by G. Myasoedov during his stay in Italy, most likely at the end of a pensioner’s trip abroad.
In front of the viewer is a pectoral image of an old Italian man in an old felt hat, dressed in a gray jacket with a knitted scarf around his neck. A man holds an orange in his left hand, and a basket hangs on his forearm. Most likely, before us is a fruit merchant.
The work of Myasoedov is characterized by a high degree of psychologism. In the portrait one can feel the master’s deep penetration into the person’s soul and the exact transmission of thoughts and feelings disturbing him. The painting is made in a dark brown with gray-green shades, the composition is built on the front of the image with a large figure inscribed in the format of the work. The artist focuses on the gaze of the old man taken away from the viewer, so that he seems to be looking inside himself and immersed in his own difficult thoughts. The lack of surroundings and a monotonous dark background enhance the emotional structure of the portrait.
In 1946, the painting was purchased from V. M. Geyer and entered the KIIR.
The work presented is exhibited for the "185th birthday of G. Myasoedov" (for many years the artist’s birth was considered to be 1835, which he himself indicated in all documents) and gives art lovers the opportunity to learn about the artist’s work, which he expressed in his canvases the deepest love for a simple person.
The exhibition runs until February 16th.
