Starting July 5, the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts will present visitors the work of the outstanding Soviet marine painter Eduard Kalnins (1904-1988), Cool to the Wind (1962), as part of the Exhibition of One Painting project.
The monumental canvas (its size is 140x200 cm) is filled with the spirit of romance: brave yachtsmen fight the raging unpredictable sea elements. Sailing the concept of “going steeply to the wind” means navigating a ship in a badewind course, that is, going almost towards gusts of wind. In a format close to the square, the artist managed to create a dynamic composition: the white tips of the sails cut sharply diagonally, they are opposed by an inclined horizon, the swollen crests of the waves are echoed by the same restless sky. The color scheme is solved in saturated bottle-green, smoky purple-violet, blue cobalt shades. Unified harmony is achieved by a common silver-pearl tone, characteristic of the master’s work. In 1974, a reproduction of the painting “Cool to the Wind” was issued as a stamp in the series “Soviet Painting”, thus gaining wide popularity among philatelists.
The exhibition will run until August 10 at the address: st. Lenin, 104 (main exhibition).
