Tarkhov was one of those artists who, from the very beginning of the war, worked on the front line, carefully recording on paper the military exploits and moments of rest of soldiers and partisans, portraits of heroes, city landscapes and architectural monuments destroyed by the Nazis. At the end of 1941, Tarkhov was sent on assignment by the political department of the Red Army to Kaluga and witnessed the liberation of the city from Nazi captivity. In January 1942, he made many sketches of Kaluga: houses smashed by shells, streets with abandoned German equipment. Some of the natural material was later used by the artist in the workshop to work on the completed canvases. Thus, among other things, the work “Kaluga. Lenin Square". Against the background of the burnt house of the Faleevs, located near the park named after Lenin, Tarkhov depicts an anti-aircraft gun,abandoned by the Nazis hurriedly leaving the city. The author did not strive to thoroughly accurately reflect the architectural appearance of the square, but Tarkhov managed to create a recognizable image of a Kaluga street crippled by the war.
