The exhibition of one painting by Dmitry Mikhailovich Tarkhov (1893–1948) "The Capture of Kaluga" (1942) will start on September 15 at the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts.
At the beginning of the war, Kaluga land was engulfed in hostilities, and by the fall of 1941 it was almost completely occupied by Hitler’s troops. The liberation of Kaluga was part of the battle for Moscow and was of great strategic importance. A special shock mobile group of forces, led by Major General V.S.Popov, overcame more than 90 km in the snow, crossed the frozen Oka and burst into the city from the direction of Romodanov. It was this dynamic moment of a sudden and carefully prepared attack by Soviet soldiers that D.M. Tarkhov portrayed on his graphic sheet! As a result of fierce fighting, the Red Army managed to defeat the enemy and successfully complete the operation. However, the war was not over yet. For two long years bloody battles took place on the Kaluga land, and only on September 17, 1943, the whole region was liberated from the fascist conquerors.
The drawing "The Taking of Kaluga" by Dmitry Mikhailovich Tarkhov is a genuine document of an eyewitness to the events, because during the Great Patriotic War the artist traveled to the battlefield in Kaluga and Tula on the instructions of the political department of the Red Army. The result of his work was numerous drawings and sketches depicting portraits of soldiers, the landscape of the front-line city and the numerous destruction caused by the fascist invaders. Today these works are included in the collections of Russian museums, including the collection of the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts.
Especially for this work, a virtual reality project was developed, which is presented on a touch screen and in the form of VR glasses.
