The name of the exhibition includes words from Akathist - solemn chants dedicated to Our Lady of Vladimir, the image of which, in its meaning and significance, occupies a special place in ancient Russian art.
The icon "Our Lady of Vladimir with the Facial Tale of Miracles" is the pearl of the collection of the Stroganov icon painting in the collection of the Perm Art Gallery. It comes from the Church of Praise of the Virgin of the ancient Eagle-town and refers to the beginning of the formation of the Stroganov Empire in the Perm Territory. The icon was created by the icon painter of the Moscow Armory, Istoma Savin, commissioned by the grandson of Anika Fedorovich Stroganov - Nikita Grigoryevich. This relic was brought to the Perm Art Gallery by Nikolai Serebrennikov in 1925.
The peculiarity of the icon of Istoma Savin is in her storyline. Instead of numerous legends about the Mother of God, the author posted here a story about a real event: the Tatar army invaded Russia in 1395 and reflected these events in The Tale of the Miracles of the Icon of the Mother of God of Vladimir. The 18 hallmarks of the icon, framing the central image of the Virgin and Child, describe various episodes of this story.
The exhibition “And Deliver Us From the Great Damage…” will present an icon of Our Lady of Vladimir with a Face Tale of Miracles and a precious salary for it in an interactive multimedia form. Viewers will be able to enlarge the image and consider all the hallmarks, “put on” a precious salary for the icon, get acquainted with archival materials and get a wide idea of icon painting. In addition, the exhibition will feature several more icons with various icon-painted editions of the Mother of God from the UGSH collection, which will expand the idea of the abundance of the Mother of God vodka.
So that ancient Russian painting does not remain “a treasure for seven seals” for the audience, during the exhibition, several lectures will be organized on the features of the icon-painting language, modern icon-painting, and the intricacies of restoration. Lectures will be accompanied by a display of iconographic monuments from the collections.
The exhibition “And Deliver Us From the Great Damage…” will work in the Perm Art Gallery until April 15, 2017.
