On December 25, the Perm Art Gallery will host an exhibition "Images of Russia in the Art of the Turn of the 19th-20th Centuries". The exposition brings together works of art of different types and genres with the theme "Russia" and reveals the development trends of Russian art at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Interest in Russia was especially vividly manifested in the culture and art of the 1870s-1920s, reflected in works on a historical theme, in paintings of folk life and landscape, in the discovery by artists of the features of ancient Russian architecture. The portraits of the “spiritual man”, the hero of the new time - a public figure, and new visual images of the Urals and the Russian North, created by the authors during their travels around the country, have also contributed to this. The question of Russia’s development, its identity, national self-determination did not leave public thought.
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, a sense of the past emerging in the landscape of cultural memory, both personal and historical, manifests itself with particular acuteness. Interest in national peculiarities was expressed in the romantic direction, or "neo-Russian style", and in all types of art and architecture. Even the menu of tsarist dinners at that time is accompanied by an image of Russian antiquity, and fashion magazines promote elements of folk clothing. At the imperial court they wear “semi-antique” outfits, and the names of magazines and collections of those years speak of national commitment: “Russian treasures”, “Russian antiquity”, “Old Russian cities - nurseries of art”. Museums of Russian history and Russian art are opening, publications about Russian art and architecture are published. Thus, the cultural events of that time confirm the general attitude towards the national idea.Art events abroad testify to the "advance of the Russian theme" outside: an exhibition of works by Russian artists in the Parisian "Autumn Salon" (1906), "Historical Russian Concerts" in Paris with the participation of Glazunov, Rachmaninov, Borodin, Glinka, Tchaikovsky and others (1907), "Russian Seasons" with Pavlova and Nijinsky, with decorations by Benoit and Bakst.
The exhibition in the Perm Gallery reveals the leading art trends at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries:
experiencing national history as personal, analyzing the social life of various strata of Russian society, new forms in art (avant-garde) as a kind of artistic "revolution".
The exhibition will feature about 200 works of all types and genres of art: painting, graphics, popular prints, icons, posters, precious metals, porcelain, sculpture, the first editions of books on Russian art and architecture, art magazines and satirical periodicals at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries… Among the authors of the works are many famous masters of that time: Ilya Repin and his son Yuri Repin, Mikhail Klodt, Natalia Goncharova, Igor Grabar, Alexey Denisov-Uralsky, Konstantin Korovin, Valentin Serov, Isaac Levitan, Nicholas Roerich and others.
Some of the exhibits of the exhibition are known to the audience, and some they will see for the first time. For example, from the funds "Ice Gone" by Abram Arkhipov, "Eve" by Vladimir Plotnikov, "Early Spring" by Leonard Turzhansky "," Old Man-Sower "by Alexander Moravov," Peter I in the Battle of Poltava "by Yuri Repin, the icon" Savior Not Made by Hands "by Nicholas Roerich, sculpture" Leo Tolstoy "by Naum Aronson and others.
