In the gallery "On Shabolovka" opens the exhibition "Reverse viewing". The project will feature works by 30 artists of the Moscow School of Photography and Multimedia. A. Rodchenko. Videos, installations, photographs and much more occupy the entire gallery space, including office space, usually hidden from viewers.
Artists will try to raise questions: what kind of relationships connect students, how their dialogue with the audience is built, and how institutional space can be transformed. The authors problematize the entire process of cultural production from the demonstration of works to interaction with the audience. Thus, intruding into the administrative premises of the gallery, students redistribute the boundaries of the artistic and cultural-political.
Boris Klyushnikov, curator of the exhibition: “For the first time, an exhibition outside of school and outside of teaching supervision defines students as a social group. Thus, it should not be evaluated as viewing, but is its inside out. Artists use the institutional apparatus, the method of excursions and direct contact with the viewer, a series of group discussions and other means of producing cultural expression. The role of the curator is also being transformed here. In fact, the curator is not a teacher, but a special gag, representing a lack of supervision and a shift in attention from viewing works to the conditions of understanding cultural production. ”

Discussion "Viewing and Interpretation".
Viewing in an educational institution is a situation in which an artist submits his work for discussion, receives feedback from the teacher and gives conceptual reasoning. However, besides these obvious goals, viewing works of contemporary art hides a number of contradictions, whether the criteria for evaluating and interpreting art are not fundamentally predetermined in advance, the asymmetry of power relations, the formatting of the student’s speech, and the call for compulsory discovery of oneself in the public field. Viewing is not as easy as it may seem. The purpose of this meeting is to identify the hidden work that is embedded in the viewing situation. Both teachers of schools and students of educational institutions will take part in the discussion.
April 14, 19:00
Discussion "Master and workshop".
The second meeting is devoted to the problem of a personal example of a master, which many students face when choosing a school and in the learning process. The workshop is a kind of author’s signature, the transfer of his personal techniques and judgments about art. The purpose of the discussion is to trace the relationship of authorship, workshop, and learning experience in the history of art and to determine the current correlation of these factors in the Moscow artistic environment.
